I found this in an article...
They say that truth is stranger than fiction. That's especially true on CBS' "Criminal Minds." Every case on that show is based on a real crime. The big problem for the writers-creators of the drama is how to tell the true story without shocking the wits out of the audience.
"We've had to tone down almost every single one of them," says executive producer Ed Bernero, who was a Chicago policeman for 10 years before he came to television.
"What is really happening is much worse than anything we could or want to do," he says. "Actually, there hasn't been a single one we didn't have to tone down."
The thing I personally dislike about this series are its twin implications that 'the mentally ill are criminals' and 'criminals are mentally ill'; neither of which is true. Yes some mentally ill are criminals and some criminals are mentally ill, but both cases are tiny minorities!
no apparently he left his badge and gun in his cabin, for hotch to find after he sent him a good bye letter.
NO! Watch the episodes! They are amazing! But if you insist... scroll down for the spoiler...

Emily Prentice is badly wounded after an encounter with Ian Doyle who gets away after stabbing her with a jagged piece of wood. Because he is still at large, Hotch makes a decision to tell the team that Em has died, even though she was saved in the ER. This action is deemed necessary because the rest of the team was in danger of being hurt in Doyles quest to hurt Em.
Ta-da. Watch the episodes though. You wont be disappointed.

No, Mark Kamps was the sound supervisor for "Criminal Minds." He died at a young age of 44 in Ventura, California.
Jason Gideon was played by Mandy Patinkin and starred in 47 episodes. Why did he leave? Basically he failed to turn up for a table read and later referred to "personal reasons" for not wishing to continue with the show. He was unhappy with the level of violence portrayed on the show. He left the show to pursue more lighthearted work.
The team was after a rapest/killer when they desided to use L as bait to catch him. L remembering being shot by the fisher king was panicking and when the unsub came L pulled out her gun and blew her cover before there was any evidence against him so after an interagation he was let go. At the end of the episode L came to the unsubs apartment met hi. In the parking lot were L shot him in cold blood. The episode following that have a side story of what really happened that night. L claims it was self-defence but Hoggner knows what really happened but says it was self-defence as L says. L later feels very guilty about what happened and resigns. She is later replaced by Priness.
