Why did the allies pick Normandy as the spot for D-day invasion?
It was the closest landfall from England. But there were numerous places up and down the Normandy coast the allies could have concentrated the landing. The idea was to keep the Germans guessing where on the Normandy coast, and if possible to trick them all together. By a series of carefully "planted" false "coded communications", the Allies did this. Hitler was convinced they would make the assault further north than they did, and concentrated troops and armor there. The five beaches the Allies landed on (Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword and Juno) were relatively unprotected except for Omaha, which while not that heavily protected, did have an advantage for the Germans in positioning (hidden, and firing down at the Allies, a distinct advantage). Omaha was hard won. The other four beaches, as sea-born invasions go, were not difficult.
Normandy was not the closest point to England. That was the Pas de Calais, where the Germans expected the attack to come. Eisenhower chose Normandy for that reason.
