Though you are correct that the Decimal system has been used for a long time, everything starts somewhere. In this case the Decimal System started in the Gupta Empire. Sorry that a 16 year old has more knowledge than someone in they're late 50's to early 60's.

Melville Dewey invented the Dewey Decimal System of Classification which allowed books to be shelved by subject. Most people doing research liked this idea since they found most of the books they wanted very close to each other. The idea caught on and it is now used in over 42 countries.
