What makes gold earrings turn black?
Besides being expensive, gold is a very soft metal, so it is mixed with harder metals to make it suitable for earrings (also gold coins, cuff links, tie clasps, rings, toe rings, navel rings, and just about everything else made from gold). Nickel is often used, and it turns black from exposure to the air, which is why an old nickel coin turns black. The gold itself should not turn black.
Why did sailors wear gold earrings?
It was a tradition dating back to greek times, in those days they believed that when you died you had to pay the ferry man on the river styx to cross, if you didn't have two bits of gold you were doomed to never enter the afterlife. when someone died on land gold coins were placed on their eyes before the funeral pyre was lit, but sailors at sea ran the risk of the boat sinking or falling off and drowning, so there would be no way for two coins to be placed with them after death. eventually someone got the idea to wear two gold earrings, so that they could use that gold to pay the ferry man. even tho that religious belief no longer continues sailors tend to be the most superstitious of any profession, as their lives are always at risk. breaking tradition is just asking for bad luck to come looking for you, so still sailors get earrings because its tradition.

How do you change a cartilage earring?
It depends. Has the piercing "tightened" around the ring, or has the skin grown over the piercing itself?
Piercings often will grow tighter as they heal, this does not mean you should force your jewelry around to "loosen it up". Just let it heal and over time your body will accommodate the foreign piece of metal.
If it's totally embedded and the jewelry is UNDER the skin, go to a doctor. Now. Not tomorrow. Right now. It must be removed by a medical professional immediately.

What to do if you are allergic to all earring types?
Other than "don't wear earrings," there's not much else to say. However, I have rather sensitive ears and can't wear the trendy earrings on a regular basis. For a temporary solution, I recommend this: clean the posts thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. Then, coat them with a thin layer of clear nail polish (believe me when I say thin; get the layer too thick, and either the backing won't go on, or it will push the polish off, exposing your ears to the harsh metals underneath) and let them dry completely (very important). Once they are dry, you can wear the earrings for much longer than you would otherwise. I'm not guaranteeing there won't be any irritation whatsoever, but I've always experienced significantly less by doing this. I would, obviously, not recommend this if you are allergic to nail polish ;)

How does your earring back go in your ear lobe?
If the back has fallen into your ear canal you might be able to remove it by flushing the canal with warm water. Fill the ear and tilt the head to drain it onto a cloth or towel so you can see if the object flushed out. If that didn't work, some warm sweet oil (see your pharmacist) may be helpful in getting it to un-adhere from the ear wax.
If flushing with water or oil doesn't work, you need to see your health professional. If you start probing, swabbing and fishing you will likely damage your eardrum or impact it deeper into the canal.

Are hypoallergenic earrings nickel free?
Oh gosh no, Hypoallergenic is a phrase that has been misused by everyone from toilet paper companies to makeup manufacturers. It was intended to imply that the product is considered safe for it's intended use and that it should not cause any adverse reaction to the body. This implication is more often than not incorrect when it comes to earrings and nickle. Of the shelf earrings from just about any store will contain nickle in the post or hook section that actually runs through the piercing as well as the butterfly backing that holds it in place. Generally 303 or 304 stainless steel still contains nickle, which are the metal types used most often in earring studs and posts. For a material to be nickle free it is suppose to be clearly marked "nickle free" and the certification proving it. Professional Body Piercing Studios carry a wide range of certified nickle free earrings in various designs to choose from.
