This implication is more often than not incorrect when it comes to earrings and nickle. Of the shelf earrings from just about any store will contain nickle in the post or hook section that actually runs through the piercing as well as the butterfly backing that holds it in place. Generally 303 or 304 stainless steel still contains nickle, which are the metal types used most often in earring studs and posts. For a material to be nickle free it is suppose to be clearly marked "nickle free" and the certification proving it. Soaking the jewellery in 70% Isoproply alcohol for 30 minutes will disinfect them quite well, you can also do a two stage disinfection, soak the earrings in Hydrogen Peroxide for 5 minutes, rinse them off and then into 70% ispoproyl alcohol for 25 minutes. Now keep in mind this only disinfects them this does not sterilize them, to sterilize the jewellery you would need to put it into an autoclave at 115 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes at a pressure of 15 ~ 18 Psi. I always run 130 degrees for 30 minutes at 35 Psi just to be sure. Now disinfection does not mean the jewellery can be worn by someone else, just you. If the jewellery is to be worn by anyone else you need to sterilize it, not disinfect it. Bacteria and other micro organisms can live in small fissures and cracks in the jewellery finish, only the high heat and pressure of an autoclave will kill the bacteria and micro organisms that can cause infections.

Can you change earrings before 6 weeks?
Of course you can. I changed my first ones after 13 days.
All you need is a good astringent and cotton buds.
First of all, I poured a little distilled witch hazel into a small bowl (this is the astringent I used). I then soaked the earrings I wanted to change to in the witch hazel while I swabbed the front and pack of my current earrings with it.
Then I took the earrings I had in out, swabbed the back and front of the exposed holes in witch hazel and slipped the new ones that had been soaking in. It's a good method because I then know a little amount of the astringent is getting into the hole and helping to keep it clean.
DO NOT use saline solution to clean your piercings or earrings with! It is NOT anti-bacterial and it WILL NOT CLEAN ANYTHING. Sea salts are good for helping to heal, but they are not anti-bacterial either. Don't use normal table salt either as this contains iodine that WILL NOT help the healing process.
