For your duke of Edinburgh award do you have to do the voluntary work once a week or every day for three months?

It depends on whether you're aiming for a Bronze, Silver or Gold award. As the related link below shows, if you are taking the former, you must have at least three months of voluntary work under your belt. You must then take a further three months in any one of these sections:

  • Volunteering
  • Skills
  • Physical

For the Silver award, you must complete 6 months of voluntary work, with a further 6 months in either:

  • volunteering
  • or physical/skills

For the Gold award (if you're feeling brave), you must do at least 12 months of volunteering, along with a further six months in either voluntary or physical/skills section.

There is much more that you need to achieve than what's mentioned above, in order to get your award, but this is, in a nutshell, what is required for each of the awards in terms of volunteering.

As for how long you must spend volunteering, I don't think there's a requirement to work once a month or once a week; just however often is convenient. Just remember though, the maximum age for the DoE is 25, so hurry!

Does anyone remember Craigentinny Edinburgh being bombed in 1942?

BBC Scotland are working to build a micro history site about this bombing (late evening of 6th August 1942) which will be placed within their Scotland's History web site. Should be up by the end of October 2009. If any one has any details or info about the raid that they would care to share please get in contact. I'm the producer on the site which is also looking into the raid on St Andrews that same evening which killed 13. There were 3 deaths at Craigentinny.

My grandfather William Anderson was first aid warden attended that night but alas he is long time passed on now, my mother remembers the night was so scary as so close, she told me they got a pregnant woman out that night but no idea of casualties, only someone from that area would be able to tell you, i lived and went to school and we all heard how it happened, but i can not remember the story, i guess someone out there will have still got the information. good luck.

Why was Edinburgh castle built for king David the 1?

Actually, it existed well before the reign of David I. The site has been fortified since the Iron Age.

You are probably referring to King David's Tower, the foundations of which are now below the Half Moon Battery.

As to why the castle was built in the first place, the answer is geological. The castle sits on top of an extinct volcano, and together with what's known today as the Royal Mile, this forms a 'crag and tail' formation. This is because during the last ice age, a glacier swept past the volcano from west to east, scraping away sheer cliffs on three sides but leaving a gentle slope on the east side. Early settlers saw the great defensive qualities of these features, which is why they chose to build there.
