Do zoos feed elephants Christmas trees?

Sadly, usually in pieces with a fork lift truck. I asked this question last week in a British Zoo and the answer was as above... with the reluctant add on "in pieces". The good news was the pieces went to a museum in Edinburgh and other places for valuable research. Math is a hoot, don't you think?
The threat to the African elephant presented by the ivory trade is unique to the species. Larger, long-lived, slow-breeding animals, like the elephant, are more susceptible to overhunting than other animals. They cannot hide, and it takes many years for an elephant to grow and reproduce. An elephant needs an average of 140 kg (300 lb) of vegetation a day to survive. As large predators are hunted, the local small grazer populations (the elephant's food competitors) find themselves on the rise. The increased number of herbivores ravage the local trees, shrubs, and grasses. Elephants themselves have few natural predators besides man and, occasionally, lions. However, many African governments legally allow limited hunting. The large amount of money that is charged for the necessary permits is often used to support conservation efforts, and the small number of permits issued (usually for older animals) ensure that populations are not depleted.
At the turn of the 20th century, it is estimated that elephants numbered between 5 and 10 million, but hunting and habitat destruction had reduced their numbers to 400,000 to 500,000 by the end of the century. In the ten years preceding 1990 the population more than halved from 1.3 million to around 600,000, largely caused by the ivory trade, prompting an international ivory ban. While elephant populations are increasing in parts of southern and eastern Africa, other African nations report a decrease of their elephant populations by as much as two-thirds, and populations in even some protected areas are in danger of being eliminated[85] Chad has a decades-old history of poaching of elephants, which has caused the elephant population of the region, which exceeded 300,000 in 1970, to drop to approximately 10,000 today. In Virunga National Park, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the number of elephants living in the observable area of the park fell from 2,889 in 1951 to 348 in 2006.
Habitat lossAnother threat to elephants' survival in general is the ongoing cultivation of their habitats with increasing risk of conflicts of interest with human cohabitants. These conflicts kill 150 elephants and up to 100 people per year in Sri Lanka. The Asian elephants' demise can be attributed mostly to loss of its habitat. For African elephants, a technique was introduced successfully in 2011 that largely prevented savannah elephants from raiding farmers' croplands. Beehive fences were put around farming areas scaring the elephants away from the areas and providing the farmers with additional source of income. As larger patches of forest disappear, the ecosystem is affected in profound ways. The trees are responsible for anchoring soil and absorbing water runoff. Floods and massive erosion are common results of deforestation. Elephants need massive tracts of land because, much like the slash-and-burn farmers, they are used to crashing through the forest, tearing down trees and shrubs for food and then cycling back later on, when the area has regrown. As forests are reduced to small pockets, elephants become part of the problem, quickly destroying all the vegetation in an area, eliminating all their resources.

Bob Mack's white elephant clubs in the 1960s?
in the 1960's our group went to a different one of bob mack's "under 21" dance clubs every week end. he had clubs in every suburb of pittsburgh and some in other cities. the out of town clubs all carried the same name of his first pittsburgh club (the white elephant). they all featured great dance music, most of which was unknown at the time. many of the biggest recording stars appeared at some of the pittsburgh clubs - we saw smokey robinson and the miracles, little anthony, the isley brothers and jr. walker and the all stars at the white elephant, bo diddley at the wildwood lodge, chuck berry at the blue fox, sly and the family stone at the lebanon lodge and sam and dave at the teen scene. mack had a team of great deejays that played at these clubs. sometimes you could not get in, they were so crowded. he always played at a huge club in the allegheny valley, called the tarena. the times we were there, the crowds were massive. the door crew said two thousand were in attendance. about 1962 mack went on the radio, playing the rare records from the dance clubs. the show was called mack's wax museum, and the records were called "monsters". every car radio had that show playing. people went nuts, when a new record came on. after a couple years, mack left the show. one of his best club deejays called mad mike took over, and continued the same format for many years. we all miss those days

Why is the Asian elephant like the African elephant?
Both Asian and African elephants are large herbivores with similar social structures, long gestation periods, and high levels of intelligence. They are both endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. However, Asian elephants are smaller with smaller ears, and they have a smoother trunk with one finger-like projection at the end, while African elephants have two.
They don't. No quadruped (four-legged) animal has four knees.
The joint on the front legs of any four-legged herbivore such as horses, cows, elephants, deer, sheep and goats that resemble our own knees (and are often informally labeled as such) is actually called the carpus - the cluster of bones that form the wrist. The real knees on animals are located on the hind legs just like humans, which are often referred to as the stifle joint. These are often found close to the animal's belly.
