The pressure eventually got to him and one night Elton turned on the gas stove/oven in the kitchen and stuck his head into it, hoping that it would eventually kill him. The only problem was that there was a window open in kitchen allowing the gas to escape thus not causing any problems at all. I believe, Bernie Taupin was the one who found Elton and pulled him out of the stove. However, the "someone" referred to in the song, I believe, is Long John Baldry, who convinced Elton not to get married and focus on his music career. Let's just say that it was the best decision ever made because if Elton was successful in his suicide attempt, we wouldn't have all of his great songs that we have today.
