Fire and Smoke Alarms

A fire alarm that is not addressable. Addressable systems are a lot more complex. They are computerised with the panel with an LCD screen with specialised prgrammed devices to work with that panel/system. An addressable system acts like a computer network, with the panel being the server and the devices (call points, detectors, sounders etc) being the computers.

Conventional systems are far more basic and used in smaller, less complex applications. They usually don't have an LCD screen and the panel will work with mnay devices. It works more on a basic electrical circuit basis rather than computerised products.

It is usually in the state criminal code, and also in the national fire code.

Manually turning off a shunt trip breaker should not set off the fire alarm. The only way that the breaker could set off the fire alarm when turned to the off position is if there is an auxiliary contact on the breaker connected to the fire alarm circuit. This is not usually done because the breaker should be able to be turned off when doing maintenance on the breakers circuit. If the breaker is a mandatory feed breaker to a piece of fire alarm equipment and shouldn't be left in the off position it might have a trouble circuit connected to the fire alarm panel. A trouble alarm on a fire alarm panel is different from an alarm circuit alarm.

Amber strobes are used with Mass notification systems that are commonly attached to fire alarms system. They are activated to give a visual warning as instructions are passed over a intercom, or loudspeaker system. Many times you will see both amber colored strobes and clear lens used in a single facility. The clear lens strobes will be labeled as fire, and amber will contain no markings.

Some fire alarms have a heat sensor built in. These sensors will "react" if the temperature in the vicinity of the alarm reaches a given threshold. There is also another type that will react to a "quick" rise in temperature. The usual method of operation involves heated air moving around the alarm via the mechanism of convection. When specified conditions appear, the alarm is activated.

We can rely on the device to communicate with an annunciator that supervises that heat sensor. The sensor is usually part of a grid of smoke and/or heat detectors that protect a given area or structure. It the thermal detector goes off, it will let us know that it has been triggered. That way we can swing into action to investigate and take appropriate corrective action. If a fire actually began, we'd be in emergency mode. We'd deploy any provided fire suppression equipment (extinguishers, hoses), or evacuate the area while someone called 9-1-1 to insure the professional helpers were on the way.

Smoke alarm may go off when it's not smokey inside because tiny, weak radioactive material which ionizes the air triggers the false alarm by sensing invisible smoke.

If your home smoke detector is tied into your electricity and is equipped with a battery backup you should not need an additional smoke detector. You should insure that the batteries are charged and that the smoke detector is functioning properly at least once a month if not more often.

Plate Repeater is used in the fire alarm system so that it shows the same information that the main control panel does. The repeater panel looks a lot like the main control panel and can be placed up to 30 meters from the main control panel.

A trigger could be part of a firearm. It could also be a word meaning to start an action, as in: the fire alarm going off was the trigger that started the evacuation of the building.

Any type of smoke, steam or particles denser than air will set off a smoke alarm. This means that smoke emitted from the incense will set off a smoke alarm when in range of the detector.
