Do you need a flue on a wood burning stove?

The flue is the chimney, where the hot air rises through, thereby drawing more air into the front of the stove.

-----

The flue is the duct that carries gaseous combustion products away from the fire. It includes the chimney, but also includes the stovepipe and possibly other ducts.

In the case of a wood kitchen range, it includes the duct surrounding the oven, so the gasses go over, down the far side, beneath toward the front, toward the rear, and up the back, surrounding the oven on all sides but the door and the side where the firebox is.

In a masonry heater, the flue is very large and directs the gasses around a series of baffles so the masonry can heat up.

How hot do wood pellets burn?

Too many variables to give one simple answer. Depends on type of wood, moisture content, and airflow (draft) Wood begins to burn at around 450 degrees F. Hoever, woods with a high resin content, burning under a forced draft can exceed 1,500 F. Enough to turn steel bright cherry red.

What are the benefits of a fireplace screen?

A grate heater can be used to make a wood burning fireplace more efficient at heating a home. Fireplaces often use electric fans to blow the heat into the room. Grate heaters use much less electricity than traditional electric fans.

What is a gray and dudley wood burning stove worth?

The value of a Gray and Dudley wood-burning stove can vary significantly based on its condition, age, and market demand. Generally, such stoves can range from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars, particularly if they are in good condition or have unique features. To get an accurate estimate, it's best to check recent sales on platforms like eBay or local classifieds, or consult with antique dealers who specialize in vintage stoves.

How good does fir wood burn in a stove?

Spruce, pine and fir are all soft woods, and tend to have too high a sap content to burn in a wood stove. The higher sap content translates into greater creosote production in your chimney and can lead to a fire. Stick to harder woods. They burn longer with more heat produced and a cleaner chimney.

How well does cedar wood burn?

Sure can. Tends to burn hot, and pretty fast. Would suggest burning cedar as a mix with other woods for best results. In an open fireplace, it will crackle and pop alot. So care needs to be taken. As always, make sure its good and dry.

Good starter wood.

What is a fireplace flue damper, and how do you open one?

There are many kinds of dampers, depending upon how old the house is and the choice by the masons. Many dampers have a hinge on the rear and a handle that can be pushed or lifted to lift the front and latch it open. Others have a lever designed to move with a knob or chain connected to the damper. Some chimneys have counter-balanced dampers on the top of the chimney that are opened by pulling and latching a chain. A "tilt and slide" damper not only opens with a handle, but also has a movable grating that can be "slid" open and shut using a knob cast into it. If you have a gas log fireplace and can not close your damper by the handle it is very possible that the damper has been disabled or welded open according to the 1991 building code that states that dampers in new gas log fireplaces must be disabled. The only type of damper that is allowable to use in a gas log fireplace is an inflatable damper. If you do not have a gas log fireplace and you cannot open or close your damper it is likely that it has corroded to the point of non-function. The chimney is a very acidy and corrosive environment any metal in it will rust and degrade rapidly over time. Lubricate the damper with a penetrating oil and try to loosen it by hand or call a chimney sweep to come and work on it.

Can you burn pecan in a fireplace?

Pecan is similar to hickory in that it's: 1. Hardwood, which means high heat output when seasoned 2. Smells good 3. Splits moderately easy 4. has good coaling qualities 5. puts off few sparks 6. dries fast when seasoning Conclusion: it's an excellent firewood, but I wouldn't cut down a large tree just for firewood if you want the fruit (pecans) when they are other trees available. How do you clean a gas fireplace?

Cast iron is a very hard material, and the best way to clean it is with a stiff wire brush. These can be purchased for around one or 1 or 2 ($2.00 or $3.00).

If the fireplace is "in situ" you should be able to clean most of the visible surfaces easily.

If the fireplace is "out" and you can move it around, then get it in the best position you can and "wire brush it" until you have removed all of the rust. be careful when moving the fireplace, although cast iron is a robust material from the point of view of attacking it with a wire brush, it is prone to fracture very easily . So if you drop it, or impacted with a hammer, you are likely to fracture it right the way across, or breaking off a chunk.

It was common to coat cast iron fireplaces with a material called "black lead" I am not sure whether this actually contains lead, however I think you should take precautions, wear gloves, and a suitable breathing apparatus to protect yourself from the dust and the possibility of ingesting lead.

Using a wire brush may help, particularly if the stove is in really bad shape. A wire brush won't give you clean shiny stove though. What you want is a product called stove oil or stove blackening. This stuff works wonders and is probably all you need to restore your stove to it's original luster, unless it is really crusty in which case you may want to start with a wire brush. I haven't found the stove blackening at your big box home improvement stores but often Ace Harware carries it.

Can you burn creosote in your wood stove after removing it from your chimney?

No.

-----

Actually, the answer is a bit more complicated than that. There is such a thing as a wood gas generator, or wood gasification unit, which is designed to produce creosote. The gas produced can be burned to heat a home, cook, heat water, or even power a car. If you were to use such a thing to heat or cook, you would have to be prepared to deal with the fact that much of the gas is carbon monoxide, which is normally burned, but is a poison that has to be considered in case of combustion failure.

There are solutions to the problem, and some are simple. One is to put the gas generator into the stove itself, or make it part of the stove. A TLUD (top lit up draft) stove works to do this. (I still would not use one indoors.) Another is to put the wood gasification unit outside the house where it is being used, and use the gas it produces externally to the house both to heat the house and to heat the wood to gasify it. If this is done, a flame failure stops the production of carbon monoxide.

One of the side benefits of using wood gasification is that it produces charcoal, which has value. Compared to a wood powered central heating unit which is external to a house, a gasifier will produce about 75% of the heat, but burning two and a half cords of wood will produce about a ton of charcoal, which has a value of about two cords of wood. If the charcoal is used to make terra pretta, the entire process could conceivably be carbon negative in its day to day operation, as it would sequester more carbon than is released in the fossil fuels needed to keep it going.

There is a link to an article on wood gas generator below. It includes a couple of photographs of vehicles that run on wood, with the gas generator attached.

Also, in case you are asking whether it is possible to build a stove that burns the creosote it produces, so the chimney stays clear, the answer is yes. Stoves with catalytic converters have been produced, but they have limitations. My take on this is that it is better to use a stove that has a good draft and burns a hot flame, so the creosote is mostly burned in the firebox. Masonry stoves are also very good at this, and are quite efficient, though they can be very expensive.

The Importance of a Fireplace Flue Damper?

It's important that an indoor fireplace flue damper be opened before igniting anything in a fireplace. The damper looks similar to a trap door and is located at the bottom of the chimney. When it's open, it provides an opening for smoke from the fireplace to escape. If it is closed while a fire is lit, smoke will enter the room rather than leave via the chimney with possible deadly consequences. If nothing is burning in the fireplace, keep the flue damper closed. This saves money on energy by preventing heat or air conditioning loss up through the chimney.

Can you burn green wood in your wood stove?

It is best to burn oak, maple, ash, or some other hardwood.

What you are really after is something that has a lot of heat output and very little smoke. You can burn coal in a stove that is specifically designed for it - don't assume a wood stove is, because it can burn through the stove. Don't burn trash or plastic in a wood stove.

--- According to the University of Idaho:

"All wood stoves should have sturdy legs, providing at least 4 inches, and preferably 8 to 10 inches, of air space between stove bottom and floor. Glass windows in wood stoves should be special safety glass designed to withstand thermal shock. A stove designed to burn wood only should not be used to burn coal. Some stoves are designed to burn either. The excessive heat of coal will soon burn out the grate or bottom of a stove designed for wood only.

Burn manufactured logs only in an open fireplace they contain wax that burns dangerously hot. "
