How do you connect gas fireplace?

First off, you need experience in pipe-fitting. If you don't, call a plumbing company that does.

The tasks you will need to perform are:

  1. Shutting of the main gas supply and all appliances that use natural gas
  2. Ensuring the atmosphere is free of natural gas
  3. POINT A: Plotting out the route from a point on the interior gas lines (at which you can cut, thread and fit a junction) to your fireplace. NOTE: if there is no gas fitting and fireplace feeder at the fireplace, I am not writing how to do that - See your fireplace manufacturer or literature
  4. POINT B: Running the pipe under the floor and through the floor joists to the connection point under the fireplace
  5. Cutting, threading and fitting the feed line from POINT A at POINT B

Testing Your Work So You Do Not Blow up Your House

  1. If you a DIYer, you may not be able to detect any gas leaks in your finished connection
  2. Call your gas company or a certified plumbing contractor
  3. You will need to ensure there are no leaks after you turn the gas supply back on and prior to turning appliance on that can ignite natural gas (or allowing any sparks of flames anywhere in your house.

Can you convert a regular metal fireplace into a ventless if you close the flue and layer refractory cement to seal the chimney?

My fireplace is in the center of my house. I have noticed that when we have a fire the cinder block bricks on the outside chimney wall feels warm. Is that normal?

Warm- normal. HOT- not normal. The flue gasses passing thru the chimney are VERY hot- they will gradually warm the mass of the concrete blocks and the flue liner- which will also cool down slowly. It should not be so hot that holding your hand on it is uncomfortable. Our home has a rather massive concrete chimney- takes 3 days to warm all the way up- and will stay wam for about 3 days after the fire is out.

How good is evergreen wood to burn?

Would not be my first choice- it burns hot and fast, has few coals, does not have the heat values of hardwood and pops enough that you REALLY need a screen. Evergreens do produce a lot of creosote, so be sure your chimney is getting a professional cleaning. We use it only as kindling, but in some areas, it is all you can get for firewood.

Can a gas log fireplace be changed over to wood fireplace?

First off you need to turn off the gas and cap the gas line. Next, remove the gas line and the vent pipes up in the chimney. After that, remove the insert or gas log and install damper doors. Then, put on a suitable door to the fireplace. Finally, put a basket in the fireplace to hold the wood.

Can you use sheet metal to surround wood stove?

Yes- but the sheet metal should be placed on spacers to hold it clear of the wall, and permit air to circulate behind it. Installed in this way it can help shield walls from the heat. If simply attached directly to a combustible wall with no air space, it will still transmit heat to the wall. Below is a link to information on using sheet metal to shield a wall from heat of a wood stove-

What is the vent to outside near your fireplace and how does it work?

IF you have a woodburning fireplace, and there is a small door- about 6 inches square on the outside of the house, check for a flip open door on the floor of your fireplace. If that is what you have, this is not a vent, but an ash clean-out. Shovel ashes thru the door on the floor of the fireplace, and you can remove them from the outside door without making a mess in the house. But not a vent. If that is not what you have, please post gain with a more detailed description.

Will putting wet wood on a bed of coals in a wood stove create creosote in chimney?

Creosote is not created- it is naturally in the wood. A "cool" burn lets the creoste present in the smoke condense on the walls of the chimney. With a hot burn, the flue gasses are hot enough that less is deposited on the chimney. Wet wood gives a cooler burn.

Will you hook up a vent free gas fireplace?

No I won't- and I would suggest you not do so either. The installation should be done by a licensed contractor.

Should fireplace flue be opened all the way?

When there is a fire in the fireplace, the flue should be all the way open. Otherwise, some smoke and unhealthful gases will come out into the room.

The damper should be all the way closed to keep out wind or cold air when there is no fire in the fireplace.
