Is the AFL rigged?

In a word, yes. Now I'm not saying that the league's top management decides at the beginning of a season which teams will make the playoffs as if it were pro wrestling and I'm not saying individual players purposely throw games but there are other ways to go about it.

Consider: On any given Sunday there are tens of thousands of dollars being bet on NFL games in Atlantic City and in Vegas. Referees don't get rich being an honest referee and if you're a mafia don with $500,000 riding on the Patriots covering the point spread you can afford to spare $10,000 in an envelope to the game's head referee to make sure that certain calls go a particular way and make sure that the Patriots cover the spread. Ever notice how poorly officiated games are nowadays? And ever notice that they never affect both teams haphazardly or randomly? More times than I can remember I've sat through an NFL game whether it's regular season, playoffs or Super Bowl and seen a pattern of consistently bogus calls going against one team while the refs totally ignore what should be penalties against the other, sometimes even for the same exact infraction or supposed infraction. I have seen the refs go out of their way to FIND something to call against a team to negate big plays and oops just happen to be looking the other way when the other team does it. Time and time and time again. So yes, the league is most certainly rigged and the corrupt referees being paid on the side by Guido and Luigi to make sure this or that team covers the spread or gets the upset are the ones to blame and who should be audited by the IRS every year automatically. And the situation seems to be getting worse, about to the point where it makes it difficult to watch.

Who has won most afl premierships as player and coach in total?

After some research, I believe the answer to be that there are 3 different people who answer to achieving the most premierships as VFL-AFL players and coaches:

The first was Jock McHale, who won 2 premierships solely as a player for Collingwood - the first being in 1903 - his first year at the club. He then went on to coach Collingwood to a record 8 premierships = 10 total premierhips.

The second was Norm Smith, who played for Melbourne Football Club from 1937. He played in 4 premierships for the club. Later he went on to coach 6 premierships over an 11 year period = 10 total premierhips.

The third was Ron Barassi, who played for Melbourne, winning 6 Premierhips as a player only with that club. Following his time at Melbourne, he accepted a coaching opportunity with Carlton, which club won 2 premierships during his short stay with the club. He then went on to coach North Melbourne for a further 2 premierships = 10 total premierships!

However, of those premierhips, some won by Ron Barassi and Jock McHale were achieved as playing coaches.

How far do afl forwards run in a game?

They do run a fair bit: they lead and form options for players kicking into the dangerous forward line. But they wouldn't run as much as the average center man.

During the 2009 Grand final broadcast, a commentator stated that St Kilda captain, Nick Riewoldt, who leads and presents from the forward line, was 'measured' at covering about 3.7 Kilometres [just over 2.3 miles] per game. Of course, that is not flat even running: it includes considerable stop-start, weaving, change-of-direction and pace and leaping for the ball. Overall, the actual strain on the muscles might be equal to nearly 10 kilometres!!

Of course, this is not characteristic of a forward, as Nick Riewoldt is known for his tremendous work-rate, and Geelong played 3 players on him during the course of the final - which worked!

the avaerage AFL salary cap is about $200,000 AU a year. But the better and more highly prized a player is, the more they get paid. Who is the best afl player of all time?

2009:

Gary Ablett Jnr.

As opinions vary considerably on these kinds of topics, the only genuine place of resort to answer a question such as this in the AFL is the official AFL itself ... the official best and fairest player recognized as such by the AFL is the player who last won the much-coveted, Brownlow Medal, and that was 'Gary Ablett Jnr' - last year in 2009.

At the moment - Gary Ablett Junior

2010:

'Buddy' Franklin OR:

1. - Dane Swan (Collingwood) 2. - Chris Judd (Carlton) 3. - Nick Riewoldt (St. Kilda) 4. - Leigh Montagna (St. Kilda) 5. - Jonathan Brown / Adam Goodes (Brisbane / Sydney). Another very strong contender is Gary Ablett Jnr - finished 2nd; with Dane Swan 3rd.

Chris Judd it was who eventually won the coveted Brownlow Medal.

How long is half time in the afl?

During play, an AFL match goes for at least 80 minutes. The game can be disrupted by ball-ups, boundary throw-ins, free kicks, and after goals and behinds are scored, which extends play time. With all that considered, average AFL matches go for 100-120 minutes. But including when they are not playing, because of possible injuries and the breaks that occur between every quarter, it lasts up to 3 hours. Television broadcasts cover the game for this long, but may extend it for an extra 30-60 minutes if they televise previews, reviews, interviews, and, if the match is a particularly special one (e.g. Anzac day), entertainment and ceremonies, before and/or after the game.
