If you are religious, things often considered sins would definitely be in your future (likely to include killing, theft, using illegal drugs, etc.). You will feel like a sinner or a loser as a result, and from then on, you will feel like "I've already done all these horrible things! God won't forgive me. My family won't forgive me. Everyone will hate me until the day I die!" Even if you are not religious, you could be killed (for no reason other than who your "friends" are), arrested, or looked down upon by almost everyone in the world (they will think anything from "That's terrible that another kid threw his/her life away!" to "What a disgusting, worthless little punk!").
Often, to join, you are "beaten in," or in other words, several people gang up on you and beat you up until you are a bloody mess (possibly broken bones, internal bleeding, organ damage, or death).
Once you are in the gang, you are in for the rest of your life. If you want out later, I'm sorry to hear that, but the gang would rather kill you before they let you just walk away and actually have a real, worthwhile life. If you thought these people are/were your friends, then you'll have a terrible surprise! Real friends won't have to beat you up before they let you hang out with them. Real friends would never even think of killing you for anything, especially just for not wanting to hang out with them anymore.
Remember, gang members are a bunch of scared little kids that got together because they thought nobody liked them, who ran around town doing horrible things to people that did not deserve them (people just living their lives), and who enjoy the "power" that they feel while they do these horrible things to other people. They never will feel good about themselves, and the most respect that they can ever get in life is the "respect" they get from other gang members, who will never be respected by anybody else. So the best thing that can happen is that some low-life/no-life punks think that you're impressive -- Don't fool yourself into thinking that's anything more valuable than the gum stuck to your shoe. They will never feel like their parents are proud of them; or that hot girl/guy down-the-block, planning to be a doctor, thinks they're amazing or attractive; or even that they grew-up to be the kind of person that they have always wanted to be (if they are lucky enough to survive, until becoming a grown-up).
There are people that care about you. If you feel pressured by gangs, tell your parents or teachers or grandparents or some other adult that you trust, they should be able to help. You are a worthwhile person, and you will feel respected as you grow older. Being a kid and growing up is hard. Being a kid in a gang and growing up is virtually impossible. Resist them, little guy, even if you're a nerd, you'll still be more proud of yourself later in life than if you joined a gang and threw your life in the trash. Nobody tells kids this, but adults don't think other people are "cool" or "popular" or "nerds" -- when you grow up, people are just people, and if you do your best, people will respect you, and more importantly, you will respect yourself. Count on it. Hang in there, you don't need them!
