Do you need an autopsy to be cremated?

User Avatar
No, but depending on the circumstances surrounding the death, an autopsy can be ordered by a coroner. In many jurisdictions, autopsies are required for people 45 years and younger. in some, 50 years, and in a few 55. Insofar as cremation, once the initial investigation into ones death has been concluded (an autopsy may or may not have been performed) and an official cause of death has been certified by the attending physician/coroner, the body will be released, to next of kin for disposition. It is at that point when the decision for burial or cremation is determined. In the UK the procedure is as above, but if the death was in an accident or suspicious circumstances - the coroner's court must become involved. An autopsy does not have to take place, but often it will be to determine how the death occurred. If a body part is essential to the coroner's hearing - these body parts may be temporarily retained for investigation after consultation with the next of kin. In such cicumstances the coroners court will give direction as to whether it is appropriate for the body at that stage to be cremated as there maybe an issue of reconciling the body parts with the rest of the body.

What animals are on Guam?

User Avatar
Perhaps the most infamous animal that many people think of when they hear "Island of Guam" is the brown tree snake. There are also boonie dogs (dogs from the jungle), boonie cats, wild chickens, wild pigs, deer, carabao (a type of water buffalo introduced by Asian influences), iguanas of all sizes, monitor lizards, lots of toads, crabs (the dungeness kind), coconut crabs (though I think stateside people call them palm thief crabs), hermit crabs (all over the place), slugs, roaches, fruit bats, quite a few birds of which includes Mariana Fruit doves, Mariana crows, lots of fish: eels, catfish, stonefish, rainbow fish, angelfish, clown fish, killifish, loaches, tilapia, parrot fishm, rabbit fish, guppies, even octopus and sea cucumbers, some sharks include tigers sharks and some nurse sharks, along with sea turtles that come by and lay their eggs on the beach and the list goes on and on. Guam also has some endemic animals and plants. The most well known ones are the Ko'ko' bird (the Guam rail) and the Ifit tree.

Asked in War and Military History, Spanish-American War, Guam

Why was Guam so important during the Spanish-American War?

User Avatar
Guam was a Spanish Colony and therefore it was a US target. It was a bloodless takeover. Guam was of use as a coaling station. All coal powered steam Navies needed places to re-coal their fleets. It was important, strategically, and also allowed the merchant marine to re-coal. It gave us a life line between Hawaii and the Philippines; which opened up the orient to US interests. What is taken in war can be kept, what is stolen after the war as an after thought is not allowed. We also took Cuba and Porto Rico. After WW1 we would end up with some of the German south sea islands, as coaling stations and strategic points needed to control the choke points of the ocean world after the Mahan theory which is still valid.

Asked in Guam

What caused the dramatic decline in Guam's native bird species?

User Avatar
There was considerable debate about the cause of the decline in Guam's birds. Some scientists argued that pesticides were to blame, whereas others believed that avian diseases might be at fault. The native birds might, for example, be susceptible to diseases carried by introduced birds or domesticated chickens and pigeons. Introductions of competing birds could aiso be responsible, not to mention the familiar list of introduced predatory rats, cats, and other mammals.
