Cedric Diggory was murdered using the Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra) by Peter Pettigrew on Lord Voldemort's order.

Voldemort wanted to get to Harry and clearly, Diggory was in his way which is why Voldemort did away with him. Also, Lord Voldemort did not want anyone living to warn everyone that he had returned. Considering he planned on killing Potter, Voldemort did not think even he would live to warn anyone.
