A head gasket on a car for example seals the space between the cylinders. or the space between the cylinders and the oil ports or the space between the cooling system and the cylinders. Should any of these Blow you can end up with water or oil inside the cylinder head which can ruin your motor. or if gasses are able to move from one cylinder to the other it will lead in irregular operation and a loss of power. In any case if it is blown it will need replacing. heads must always be tightened down with a torque wrench to stop it from cracking or becoming distorted.

That depends on the age of the car..the number of miles and how much the car is worth versus how much it costs to have the work done...do if you have a twelve year old car with 125000 miles and it's only worth 1500 dollars....and a head gasket job costs $400...then is that car worth about 2000 dollars to you??? Is the risk worth the expense if the transmission is probably going to go out soon...or if the car was driven for a while with the blown gasket...then your probably also going to have the engine seize up soon because the engine oil was contaminated with engine coolant and the bearings are now in really bad condition...always be aware that something as severe as a blown head gasket can lead to other serious repairs.

A compression test will verify if the gasket is blown.
