Hephaestus created the Gods' weapons, he was the God of fire. His mother Hera sent him in Naxus when he was young to learn the art of blacksmith. He made jewellery, chains, swords, bows, and all sorts of weapons. As a God, he gave his creations special abilities, making invincible the ones that owned them.
Why did Hephaestus leave mount Olympus?
Hephaestus didn't leave Mount Olympus, his mother, Hera, was so ashamed by his ungodly looks that she threw him straight off of Mount Olympus. When Athena was born from Zeus' mind, Hera's jealousy got the better of her. She thought that, if Zeus could make a child just by brains, so could she. The result was Hephaestus, who is told to be the ugliest god there ever was on Mount Olympus.

Who would worship Vulcan if Roman gods were believed in today?
Since many people no longer need to physically forge objects out of metal, I would assume that steel and metal manufacturers would be the closest to the blacksmiths of the ancient Roman times.

For instance, when he returned to Olympus after being cast out by Hera, his mother, he made his revenge by creating for her a golden throne that when she sat on it, she couldn't get up again. He also made the thunderbolts of Zeus (along with the Cyclopes) and created the armor of Achilles, among others.
