He was the son of Hera. In some versions his father was Zeus and in that case he had very many siblings (halfbrothers and -sisters). Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Athena, Ares, Persephone were his most known siblings but he had much more because of Zeus

What strengths did Hephaestus have?

For instance, when he returned to Olympus after being cast out by Hera, his mother, he made his revenge by creating for her a golden throne that when she sat on it, she couldn't get up again. He also made the thunderbolts of Zeus (along with the Cyclopes) and created the armor of Achilles, among others.

In one legend, I am not sure of it's origin, Hera threw Hephaestus off of Mount Olympus, because she was so shocked of how ugly he was.
Another legend, from Homer's The Iliad suggests that Zues threw Hephaestus off of Mount Olympus when Hephaestus tried to help Hera, against Zeus's wishes.
