Homer wrote a very improbable account of when Hermes was still a baby he stole a whole herd of cattle from his half brother Apollo. He later served his father honestly and faithfully as the messenger of Zeus, but he was certainly depicted as being sharp-witted and able to steal the helmet of invisibility right from under Hades' nose. I think that although he was clever and wily, he was by no means an evil or wicked thief and stole things to help people. Hermes was related to all of the Olympians; Aphrodite was at one point his lover, his son-daughter was Hermaphroditos and also Priapos (who is argued to be a son of Dionysus being a deity of fertility and vegetation); among other divine children included Angelia (of unknown mother) and Eleusis whose mother was Daeira; the ladny Theoboule bore Palaistra, goddess of wrestling.
