they don't hibernate. they do tunnel down into the sand to molt (shed their exoskelaton and grow). the length of molting depends on the size of the crab. tiny ones can take two weeks, meduim (golf ball sized) can take from two weeks to a month or two, really big ones can even take 3 months. never disturb a crab while it is molting.

if its a land crab i might spend 5 to 8 min. in the water and if its a water crab it lives in water and they should not be fully under water they will drown the need to have a water pool *if to much water it will drown* just a little so it can get in and out and it clean itself so just a little pool

Currently the best place to buy hermit crabs is from pet stores. Small stores have a better likelyhood of their crabs being treated humanely as large chains often have poor conditions.

Mall kiosks are usually a very undesireable place to purchase them, as there is often very little in the way of supplies for your crabs and there is also a good chance they have been in very poor conditions leading to ill or permanently damaged crabs that will not live long.

The same for tourist shop and beachfront strip malls. If the crabs have been kept in a wire cage (which is very common in these kinds of places) and exposed to the air and temperatures, the chance is they will die rather soon, usually within a few weeks of purchase.

Make sure to research the proper habitat, temps, humidity, and feeding and water treatment for hermit crabs before you purchase them. Do NOT depend on pet stores to know what you will need, they are often very uneducated on the care of hermit crabs, and their job is just to sell you "stuff". Most of the "stuff" available in pet stores for hermit crabs is not safe for them, and not what they need.

15 gallons would be good for five hermit crabs at tops.

When they get too big for their present shell they go and find a bigger one, make sure you have some of various sizes available.

Don't throw them away they may be molting mine just molted. I thought he was dead but I kept him because he didn't fall out of his shell. He had white eyes. But I put him in the iso tank and he molted the next day, he was medium and it took three days. You are allowed to keep Hermit Crabs from the beach but it is really not good for the hermit crab because it will probably get sick and die.

Though there are few illnesses that a hermit crab gets you can tell when your hermit crab is in distress by a few symptoms.

1. Streaking - a hermit crab does not leave it's shell unless something is wrong.

2. Dropping Limbs - this is not a normal behavior, if your hermit crab has dropped limbs something is wrong.

3. Not moving/sluggish movement. Going into a hibernative state is a reaction to something being wrong, usually in the environment such as low humidity/temperature.

No. They need constant humidity and warm moist soil. It might be possible for some to survive down towards the border, but I doubt it. Their is no stable conditions for them to survive. That's why you will find them in places like Florida, or the caribean.
