When did the south Korea and north Korea ended?

The Korean War officially ended in 1953 with the signing of an armistice agreement. After three years of conflict North and South Korea agreed to a ceasefire and established the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) a 2.5 mile wide strip of land separating the two countries. Since then there has been no formal end to the war and both countries remain in a state of armistice. Despite the technical state of war diplomatic relations between the two states have improved since the 1990s leading to a series of reconciliatory agreements.

  • 1953: Armistice agreement signed establishing the Korean DMZ.
  • 1990s: Improved diplomatic relations between North and South Korea.
  • 2000-2018: Multiple reconciliatory agreements and summits.

Why did North Korea invade South Korea in 1950?

For many reasons the North invaded the southern part of Korea, first being that the North wanted to unify the whole peninsula under communism.

At the end of WWII (it being held by Japan during the war) it was split by the Allied forces. The north held by the Soviets troops and the south by the United States troops. This made it a "hot spot" in the Cold War, and both sides wanted a chance to fight the other so Korea was a likely place for it to happen.

How does the standard of living in South Korea differ from that in North Korea?

The governing styles in South Korea are drastically different than those in North Korea.

South Korea is considered a first class, safe and efficient country. Living in places such as The US, the only things that could be found odd are mostly mandatory military service for men under 30 years, and that abortion is illegal. Food is, for the most part, not a hardship in South Korea. Seoul is a huge, high class city and a lot of the country is farmland.

In both countries, the climate is mild, but on the cold side.

The North Korean government is strict, and although technically a republic, remains a dictatorship. A modern day feudalism can be noticed, with around %90 of the population living outside the capital, P'yongyang, and food situation is scarce.

For the other %10 percent, life is fairly good - P'yongyang has a great university, specializing in language, but the city is mostly made of government officials and their families.

Laws are strict and bad things that are said about the government are federally punishable. For most of the country, leaving is not allowed.

South Korea invaded North Korea to try to reunite the country?

South Korea did not initiate an invasion of North Korea. The Korean War was initially started by the invasion of an ill-prepared South Korea by the (North) Korean People's Army on June 25th, 1950. This was because North Korean leader Kim Il Sung wanted to unite the two factions of Korea that had been developed under the division of responsibility for postwar occupation forces between the US and Soviet Union.

It is true that after UN intervention saved the South Koreans from a full-out defeat, UN-led forces entered North Korea and reached as far north as the border with China in some locations prior to the Chinese intervention. This part of the war could be classified as a counter-invasion.

How did Korea gain POLITICAL independence from Japan?

When Japan was defeated by the USA and the USSR (who had very recently recently decided to declare war on Japan after the fall of the Nazis and at the request of President Truman), Korea, a territory of Japan since 1910, was split in half much like Nazi Germany was divided between the victorious Allies. The Northern half of Korea belonged to the USSR, and the Southern Half to the USA-- this is also the root of North Korean Communism, the reason why the Korean War erupted (when Comunist North Korea tried to take over South Korea), and why there are two Koreas today.
