How do you handle a thoroughbred breeding stallion?

Thoroughbreds are sensitive horses and a Thoroughbred Stallion can be high strung and aggressive if not handled properly. A stallion needs a firm hand and quick discipline if he gets out of control, but don't be too rough or heavy handed or they may fight back. You must show him that you are the leader and expect him to behave himself properly. On that note however not all stallions should be stallions and if the horse is not up to snuff either conformation or show/race record wise it's probably best to have it gelded for everyones safety.

Do all pregnant mares wax?

No...not all mares wax before foaling.

What is the horse's breed of the dancing horse in the movie Rustler's Rhapsody?

I have been in the horse world for 33 years. The Lipazanner's are usually what they use for "dancing" but there was non of them in this movie. I am guessing, because this is a hard one, but a Paso Fino, but this horse looks to large, and is not always moving like a gaited horse. I read somewhere this movie used several horses, only one Palamino, but that's generally just a color but does have a registry. The horse is awesome no matter what! Sela Ward's Wildfire IS NO ARABIAN, unless that arab has the ugliest and worst conformation for an Arab. The horse is gorgeous, but it is NOT an Arab. Arab's have tiny dishy heads, and are bouncy, and stunning!

How often does a horse come in heat and how many days does it last?

The entire heat cycle lasts about 20 days. 14 days in diestrus (not in heat) and 6 days in estrus (heat). There are a number of variables that can change this ratio, exposure to a stallion, early embryonic death, infection, hormone imbalance, ovarian and pituitary tumors.

How long does the intercourse of a stallion last?

Intercourse usually lasts for 30-60 seconds before the stallion ejaculates completely. Time can be prolonged if the mare is worried, scared or uncooperative.

What months do mares go in heat?

Generally, the natural time of year for a mare to cycle is spring, summer and part of

the fall. However, mares can cycle year round as long as the photo period is long enough. Breeders can also stimulate cycling by providing additional light beginning in

November or December in order to breed for early foals. Creating an artificial breeding season is generally associated with the racing and futurity breeds where

competition at a young age makes foals born in January-March (in the northern hemisphere) more desirable.

Is it normal for mares in heat to go off their food?

Normally, mares do not go off feed when they are in heat although, if they are near or in with a stallion, they may spend more time showing their interest and or being bred than eating.

Did the Irish use a horses penis for a shillelagh years ago?

No...horses have a vascular penis so it could not effectively be used as a shillelagh. For this to work the animal would need to have a large penial bone. Something a horse doesn't have.

Was the akhal teke bred in russia?

No, it is a desert breed of horse that is thought to have descended from ancient Scythian type (gazelle like and light bodied from the arid deserts of central Asia).

"Akhal" translates to "pure". The horse was so named to identify with the Teke tribe, "Pure Teke" from Turkmenistan which was once part of the Soviet Union.

What is a breeding share in horse racing?

When a successful race horse stallion retires from racing the horse's principles often sell breeding rights or shares of the stallion to interested breeders. This gives share owners annual breedings based on the number of shares owned for a set price. Share holders are responsible for a percentage of the board and care of the stallion based on the total cost and the share contract.

If the stallion is sucessful at stud shares can be sold for their increased value or the

annual breeding right can be sold.

There are risks involved as well. The shares may decrease in value, the stallion could prove infertile or be injured or ill and be unable to breed for a season or seasons.

Is it safe to grab a horses penis?

The primary reasons to handle a stallion's penis are for cleaning pre and post breeding and to assist with intro-mission. Generally, the penis is gently deflected and rinsed with fresh, clean water to remove debris. The penis can be held and manipulated to determine if he has "bean" formation in the glans (an accumulation of smegma that needs to be removed for both sanitation and the stallion's comfort). Grabbing and holding onto the penis is contraindicated.

With the above being said, any time a person is handling a stallion's penis the situation can be dangerous depending on the stallion, his level of arousal, proximity of a receptive mare and on his demeanor. Caution is always advised.

Is it ok to give a horse Benzathine?

Benzathine is often used in penicillin products designed for cattle. While there have

been instances where Penicillin G Benzathine has been used in horses with the idea

that it has longer lasting action (therefore requiring fewer injections) it often has the

side effect of producing deep muscle pain in horses. This side effect may not occur in all individuals but it is something to be aware of if Benzathine containing injections are

in use.

What does fetus look like at 7 months in a horse?

At 7 months of gestation in a horse, the fetus is approximately 28 inches in length and can weigh around 45-50 pounds. It is covered in hair and its physical features like the head, limbs, and body are well-defined. Does human pregnancy test works on horses?

== == No it doesn't. Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone only present in pregnant human females. The hormone is called hCG (HUMAN chorionic gonadotropin). You will need to call your vet to see if your horse is pregnant.

Does a horses appetite change when it is pregnant?

Yes, a pregnant horse's appetite may increase as the pregnancy progresses. This is because the growing fetus requires more nutrients, leading to higher energy demands on the pregnant mare. It is important to provide proper nutrition during pregnancy to support the health of both the mare and the developing foal.

How do horses mate?

If the mare is receptive and in a period of estrus where she will allow the stallion to mount her (called "standing heat"), she will stand still as the stallion mounts and breeds her.

The mare will tell the stallion that she is ready by urinating over her back end, "winking" her vulva, and turning her rear to the stallion to allow him to sniff and tempt him to mount. If she's frisky she will kick out, nip at his neck and shoulders, and let out a squeal during the whole nipping-kicking-turning-butt-end-towards-mate courting exercise. The stallion will often display his penis (sigmoid muscle will relax letting the penis fall out of the sheath where it is housed when the stallion is not experience sexual arousal or urinating) in his sexual excitement about this mare in heat, sometimes letting it hang low and often stiffening it up so that it bumps against his belly.

When the mare is in standing heat, the stallion must have his penis out and fully erect and the mare hold her tail to the side in order to be able to penetrate (and for the mare to allow such penetration) the mare's vagina and begin mating. He mounts from the rear, resting his rib cage on the mare's hips and keeping his front legs in front of the hips against the mare's loin area. He will use his hind legs, which remain on the ground, to "hump" or jump to encourage ejaculation on his behalf and for the mare to experience orgasm, though very subtle this orgasm is (much more subtle than the orgasm experienced in women). The whole time the mare stands still, though sometimes she'll move around a little to get more comfortable with holding his weight on her rear for the few minutes it lasts.

When the stallion has fully ejaculated semen into the mare, he dismounts back onto all fours and allows his penis to "soften" and pull back into his body. Usually a stallion will mate with a mare several times over her estrus period (estrus in mare lasts for several days), but only during the times she is receptive. The times when she is in heat but not receptive (not in standing heat), she will allow the stallion to court her, but never mount to breed her. Not that the stallion won't mount her because he will any chance he gets, but the mare will move away and "punish" him by kicking or biting at him for his attempts to breed her without her "consent," in a manner of speaking.

By the time the estrus period is done, the mare may be pregnant, and no longer ready to breed until a few weeks after she has foaled.
