What saddle pad looks good on a black horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Just about any color goes well with a black colored horse. For schooling or lessons let your tastes show and pick saddle pads in the colors or patterns you like the best. For shows the pad should conform to the show organizations rules.

For example in western sports a large square pad or blanet can be any color unless the rules state otherwise and people tend to match the pads to their outfits. In english classes the typical colors are white and black , either in a square shape or a fitted pad shape.

A bridle with no bit is called a what?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A bit is the part of the bridle that gets put in the horse's mouth. It is usually metal. It's used for control. The reigns are connected to it. A bridle without a bit is built differently to put pressure on different pars of the horse's head to give the rider control with the reigns. Though many riders use bitless bridles for many many reasons, I like them because when my horse and I go on trail rides, we can stop and take a break and I can let my horse eat grass without the hassle of changing from bridle to halter.

How did cowboys use rope and a horse to catch a cattle?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cowboys used ropes and horses to catch cattle in a couple of ways. The horse itself was used to allow the cowboy to keep up with the cattle and for 'stopping power'. They would then lasso the cattle by either throwing the rope over the cattle's horns, head, or heels. Once the rope was secure around the animal they would then wrap the rope around the saddles horn or secure it in some other way if there was no horn to use. The horses size would keep the animal from getting away, like an anchor on a ship.

How do you care for the saddle and bridle?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You care for a bridle in much the same way you would a saddle. You should wipe it down after every ride and clean it at the very least once a month, once a week would be better. You should make sure to hang the bridle correctly by the crown piece on a hanger designed for bridles. When it's time to clean it, you should take it completely apart, noting where each hole was set at and clean it the same way you would a saddle, let it dry and then put it back together again.

The guy who puts the shoes on the horse is a farrier, but usually he doesn't make the shoes from scratch. Today most farriers buy shoes already made, and then just adjust them to the horse. Earlier probably a blacksmith would do the rough shaping of the shoes.

What type of saddle is used in Australia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Australian saddles, called Aussie saddles or Australian stock saddles are very similar to western saddles American riders use. The main difference is the absence of the saddle horn up front, which allows the rider to fit more comfortable down into the saddle allowing your pelvis to make contact with the surface, which over the course of a 8 hour day will provide greater stability for the rider, less impact on the spine and more maneuverability (center of gravity) for the horse. The seat of an Australian saddle naturally puts the rider in a balanced riding position, with half the rider's weight in the seat and half in the stirrups. The Australian terrain is very different from American terrain, it is very harsh, remote and hard and flat. Horses in Australia are used to work livestock, handling long arduous cattle drives that may take weeks to complete. Due to these conditions where the rider is in the saddle for prolonged periods, day after day, the Australian saddle has evolved from it's American cousin.

Why do cross country riders pull on the reins so much?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In order to have proper communication for collected work, you need to have contact with the horse's mouth. The reins should not be 'tight', actually the connection should be a very light one but the reins should not be hanging loose either. If the horse is moving correctly and is truly obedient and in harmony with his rider, then he should accept contact on the reins without sticking his nose in the air, ducking his nose behind the contact, or otherwise resisting. He should move forward confidently and happily and work in harmony with his rider, using the contact as an aid rather than getting defensive against it.
