Hurling is one of the most ancient sports there is. It seems to have been first played by the ancient Irish thousands of years ago, and has remained the national game (along with Gaelic football) ever since.
That is an extremely difficult question to answer. There are about 2500 GAA clubs in Ireland. Not all would have Hurling teams, but those that do would have several teams, usually split by age categories. Some of the larger clubs would have a large amount of teams. You also have school and college teams, some again having several age categories. There are also teams from workplaces. Then on top of that you have county teams, again with various age groups. So you are talking thousands of individual teams. That is the best estimate you are going to get.
Why players in hurling are not paid?
No, they are not paid. Gaelic Football and Hurling are amateur sports, so players do not get paid. This actually makes the sports better, as players are playing for the love of the game, for their teammates, for their home town or county, for their family and friends, and for their team's supporters. These are all far better reasons and incentives to play than any payment could ever be.
When everyone first plays a sport we do it purely for the fun, and that is when it is most enjoyable and when we play best. Professionalism actually destroys many sports. The vast majority of GAA players play for the same teams for all of their playing career. They have a sense of belonging to that team and the wider community. A professional sports person who plays for many teams during their career can never have that connection. Only when they compete for their country do they come anyway close to that.
GAA players get expenses for things like travelling to training and they get well looked after in other ways. To pay them to play would destroy the game, as it has done for many sports. Payment removes all the incentives I listed, and nothing can motivate a player like those do. For the biggest matches of the year, Irish people abroad will often come together to watch matches on TV in Irish pubs or clubs in the countries that they are living in. With today's technology they can also watch or listen to matches online. The two biggest matches of the year, the All-Ireland Hurling Final and All-Ireland Football Final are played on two separate Sundays in September. On those two days Irish people all over the world will be endeavouring to see or listen to the matches. As Hurling and Gaelic Football are Ireland's two main national sports, the two finals are the biggest sporting events in Ireland every year.
A question like that is very hard to answer. Even the greatest experts would disagree. It is also hard to compare teams that played in different eras, because different people saw them play and the nature of the game has changed. All people can really do is judge the teams they have actually seen. The Kilkenny display last September would have to be one of if not the most complete displays in an All-Ireland final ever seen. They are certainly up there amongst the greatest teams ever, but it is very difficult to say that they are the best ever.
