How much are all-ireland hurling tickets 2009?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A terrace ticket will be €35. A stand ticket will be €70. Premium level and corporate level tickets will be higher. For All-Ireland Finals tickets are not sold to the general public in the way they are for all other matches. Tickets are distributed through the county boards and clubs, so they are always very difficult to get, even for people who have contacts in the GAA.

Hurling is the National game in which country?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hurling is a field sport played with a stick and ball, loosely similar to field hockey and lacrosse. Hurling is the fastest field game in the world. It is also one of the most skillful games in the world. The game is the national sport of Ireland, where it is predominantly played. It will also be found in parts of the world where a lot of Irish people live, who then set up clubs and teams. The "Irish Diaspora", which refers to the large number of Irish outside Ireland, has created opportunities for hurling around the world. So much so, that London and New York are considered "counties", along with the 32 counties in Ireland and Northern Ireland, in the All-Ireland competition in September.

Although it is a huge sport in Ireland, the game is strictly amateur. Although the biggest match of the year, the All-Ireland Final, is played in front of a crowd of over 82,000 spectators and broadcast on TV, radio and the internet to an audience of millions, the players are not paid. They all have day jobs, and play for the love of the game, which in fact enhances the way they play as they are more loyal to their teams.

Hurling is played on a pitch approximately 137m long and 82m wide. If you were to take a soccer goal and a rugby goal and stick them together, you would have the type of goal that is used in Hurling. Getting the ball over the crossbar scores 1 point and getting it into the net scores 3 points.

The stick, or "hurley" or "hurl" (called a camán in Irish) is curved outwards at the end, to provide the striking surface. The ball or "sliothar" / "sliotar" is similar in size to a hockey ball but has raised outer seams.

You may strike the ball on the ground, or in the air. Unlike hockey, you may pick up the ball with your hurley and carry it for not more than four steps in the hand. You cannot pick it up directly from the ground using your hand. After those steps you may bounce the ball on the hurley and back to the hand, but you are forbidden to catch the ball more than twice. To get around this, one of the skills is running with the ball balanced on the hurley, which is called a "solo".

Each team consists of fifteen players, lining out as follows: 1 goalkeeper, three full-backs, three half-backs, two midfielders, three half-forwards and three full-forwards. Each player is known by his number, making the sport a "humble" game since player names are not printed on the jersey.

Goalkeepers may not be physically challenged whilst inside their own small parallelogram, but players may harass them into playing a bad pass, or block an attempted pass.

Teams are allowed a maximum of three substitutes in a game. Players may switch positions on the field of play as much as they wish but this is usually on the instructions of team officials.

Officials for a game comprise of a referee, two linesmen (to indicate when the ball leaves the field of play at the side and to mark '65'' free kicks and 4 umpires (to signal scores, assist the referee in controlling the games, and to assist linesmen in positioning ''65' frees). A "65" is awarded when a defender knocks the ball over his own end line, similar to when a corner is awarded in soccer. A free, in line with the point at which the ball crossed the end line is taken 65 metres from the end line.

A goal is signalled by raising a green flag, placed to the left of the goal. A point is signalled by raising a white flag, placed to the right of goal. A "65" is signalled by the umpire raising his/her outside arm, and standing at the point where the ball left the field. A lines man will move to the corresponding point on the 65 metre line to indicate where the fee is to be taken from. There is no "offside" in Hurling, like in soccer, but a 'square ball', is when a player scores having arrived in the 'square' prior to receiving the ball, is signalled by pointing at the small parallelogram.

There are far more rules in the game. A good idea is for you to look at these 3 videos which are part of a set explaining Hurling. See the links below:

How many subs in hurling?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

That is an extremely difficult question to answer. There are about 2500 GAA clubs in Ireland. Not all would have Hurling teams, but those that do would have several teams, usually split by age categories. Some of the larger clubs would have a large amount of teams. You also have school and college teams, some again having several age categories. There are also teams from workplaces. Then on top of that you have county teams, again with various age groups. So you are talking thousands of individual teams. That is the best estimate you are going to get.

Why players in hurling are not paid?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, they are not paid. Gaelic Football and Hurling are amateur sports, so players do not get paid. This actually makes the sports better, as players are playing for the love of the game, for their teammates, for their home town or county, for their family and friends, and for their team's supporters. These are all far better reasons and incentives to play than any payment could ever be.

When everyone first plays a sport we do it purely for the fun, and that is when it is most enjoyable and when we play best. Professionalism actually destroys many sports. The vast majority of GAA players play for the same teams for all of their playing career. They have a sense of belonging to that team and the wider community. A professional sports person who plays for many teams during their career can never have that connection. Only when they compete for their country do they come anyway close to that.

GAA players get expenses for things like travelling to training and they get well looked after in other ways. To pay them to play would destroy the game, as it has done for many sports. Payment removes all the incentives I listed, and nothing can motivate a player like those do. If you've ever seen Gaelic Football and Hurling, you'll see how much passion they play with, far more than most professionals do. Check out YouTube for videos if you haven't.

Where can you see a hurling game in August?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is mainly played in Ireland. Hurling would not be well known in most countries in the world. It is one of Ireland's two national sports. However, as Irish people are found in many countries, wherever they are in large numbers GAA Clubs (Gaelic Athletic Association) are founded. GAA Clubs would also have Gaelic Football as part of their activities. As the Irish people are found in so many places, GAA competitions are held in many parts of the world, between local clubs. There are regional competitions in Britain, other parts of Europe, America, Asia and Australia. The All-Ireland Championships, which features teams from counties all around Ireland, also includes teams from London and New York. The London team won the 1901 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Irish people at home and abroad follow their teams with great interest. Irish people abroad will often be seen wearing sports shirts which are in fact the shirts of their home county or local club. For the biggest matches of the year, Irish people abroad will often come together to watch matches on TV in Irish pubs or clubs in the countries that they are living in. With today's technology they can also watch or listen to matches online. The two biggest matches of the year, the All-Ireland Hurling Final and All-Ireland Football Final are played on two separate Sundays in September. On those two days Irish people all over the world will be endeavouring to see or listen to the matches. As Hurling and Gaelic Football are Ireland's two main national sports, the two finals are the biggest sporting events in Ireland every year.

Who is the best hurling team?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A question like that is very hard to answer. Even the greatest experts would disagree. It is also hard to compare teams that played in different eras, because different people saw them play and the nature of the game has changed. All people can really do is judge the teams they have actually seen. The Kilkenny display last September would have to be one of if not the most complete displays in an All-Ireland final ever seen. They are certainly up there amongst the greatest teams ever, but it is very difficult to say that they are the best ever.

Tipperary won the first All-Ireland Final in 1887, but there was no Munster Final that year. The first was in 1888 which was won by Cork. At that time it was actually club teams that represented counties, so it was a club called Tower Street that played as Cork that year. Thurles had represented Tipperary in 1887.

How many points are given for a goal in hurling?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hitting the sliotar between the tall posts (similar to rugby posts) is a "point" worth one point. Hitting the sliotar into the net (similar to a soccer net) is a "goal" worth three points. The scoring in hurling is displayed like this:

Team A 3-8 Team B 0-16

The first number represents goals (three points) and the second number represents points (one point)

In the above example, Team A won scoring 17 points against Team B which scored 16 points.

Why is a hurling ball called a sliotar?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sliotar is a special name given to the ball for Hurling. The Irish word for ball is liathróid, so it is not related to that. Football is often referred to as peil.
