Hyenas, specifically striped hyenas, are not endangered, but rather on the vulnerable species list. The reason for this is mainly humans using them for trading and poaching, as well as being violent to the species. There has also been a decline in the prey they hunt for, making it difficult for them to eat properly.

How do you defend yourself against a hyena?
A common mistake is that they are related to dogs, they're not. Instead they are a family all of their own. However it's an understandable mistake when you consider they're only means of defense is a pack like attitude and an incredibly powerful jaw wielding all those teeth! If attacked by another animals (this will usually be a lion or a human) the hyena, or hyeana depending on what part of the world you're from, emits the famous 'laughter' noise. They have several other noises that are made in excitement and/or are used to communicate with others in the pack. It's said that others can hear them up to three miles away. So it's a handy way to call for help! The powerful jaw I mentioned is evident when the robust mammal decides to take down a full-grown topi antelope by its jaws alone. The topi will leap, lunge and spin in a effort to throw off its captor. This effort is futile however, because a fully grown hyena can support its own weight solely by its jaws. And if all else fails, they can run up to 30miles an hour! If you want to know about defending yourself AGAINST a hyena, copy and paste the link below into your browser for a true life story from a woman who survived such an attack http://www.jewishsf.com/content/2-0-/module/displaystory/story_id/1870/edition_id/28/format/html/displaystory.html It seems the best defense (i'm such an animal person so I hate saying this) is to shoot them if necessary. If researching this animal, avoid confusion between the 4different types of hyena. Some are scavengers and will only eat meat, some our primarily vegetarian or eat only insects, others however will hunt and kill what ever they can get. I think if you have an interest you should definitely look them up. The are intelligent and have their own society, very fascinating stuff!
Lions live in Africa, and black caimans live in South America. They will never meet.
Is a hyena a mammal or reptile?
Many people think its a dog, others cat. Truely it is nether. The hyena has its own family, the Hyenidae. In this animal family belongs the Brown hyena, the Spotted hyena, the Striped hyena, and the insect eating Aardwolf. I hope more people actually figure this out and start knowing what animal a hyena is :)
the hyena has good jaw power so if it got a hold of a wolfs neck it would snap the wolfs neck but the wolf has claws that can give infection and kill the hyena and it also has long teeth so my opinion would most likely be the hyena
Wolves are like humans in that there are huge differances among them ,, the most powerful of wolves would be more then a match for the most powerful hyenas , yet the hyena is closer in ability to each other than the wolf ,, there are wolves that weigh over 200#s and have nearly the same bite force as adault hyenas , there are wolves that weigh less than 50#s ,, the huge wolves would probly dominate and kill the hyena ,, this is why hyenas do not fair well in wolf country ,, large wolves do not fair well in hot humid jungle conditions;
Spotted Hyenas would sometimes kill a lion so a wolf has nothing for himself against one.
Yes, their sandy colored fur and slightly darker spots provide excellent camouflage in the tall grasses of the savannas from other predators that may be lurking in the area.
Hyenas may be territorial, but they are scavengers so they may also venture into other predators' territories.
Also, their hunched stature is a bonus in blending into their surroundings.
Yes. They are omnivores. An omnivore is an organism that eats both plants and animals. Hyenas are omnivores. I had trouble on this too!
