Jaundice

Jaundice is the yellowing of the skin caused by increased levels of bilirubin in the blood.

212 Questions

Can jaundice be cured?

Jaundice it not a disease disease per se, rather it is a symptom that indicates the level of the bile pigment called Bilirubin has overshot its normal value of 0.6 to 1.2 mg/decileter.

The level of bilirubin in blood can rise due to a variety of conditions. In neonates (newborn infants) the jaundice is due to breakdown of blood (hemolysis). In adults it may be due to obstruction of the common bile duct--obstructive jaundice, or due to liver infections--such as Hepatitis A, B or C. Hepatitis A is caused by contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B and C are transmitted through blood and other body fluids.

Whether or not jaundice can be cured depends upon the underlying cause. Neonatal jaundice is usually self correcting, responding very well to phototherapy.

Jaundice in adults due to an obstruction is relieved once the obstruction is removed. When caused by infectious hepatitis, it depends on whether or not the underlying infection is curable. Generally there is no known cure of the hepatitis B and C, though these respond to treatment which affect the symptom.

Is infant jaundice fatal?

Infant jaundice can be fatal if untreated. Most infants recover.

Can you breastfeed when you have jaundice?

Yes...but it should be properly cooked. Properly boiled eggs can be consumed but not deep fried in oil.

How do you know the eggs have jaundice?

How does drinking cause jaundice of the liver?

Can jaundice affect the brain?

Jaundice is an infection of the liver, and if it , the liver was week due to early drinking, it can cause the patient to even die.

What diet precautions do you need to take for jaundice?

EAT turmeric

Meals should be small but taken frequently.

radish juice PREVENTION

Drink water that is: • Boiled for 5 minutes

• Filtered by membrane filters like RO systems

• Chlorinated

• Ozonised

• Avoid raw foods when sanitation and hygiene is suspect

• Consume adequately cooked food as cooking destroys virus

• Patients must wash hand thoroughly to avoid spread by contamination Treatment

• Avoid exertion

• Take plenty of fluids

• Stay on normal diet

• Use supplementary vitamins

Eat vegetable broth, which is replete with minerals and trace minerals, and is easy to digest. Fresh vegetable juices are an excellent dietary supplement as well. Eat a diet of whole, unprocessed foods. Avoid processed food products that contain preservatives, artificial flavorings and colorings, and other additives. Avoid saturated animal fats, fried foods, and large meals, all of which place added stress on the liver. Strictly avoid alcohol, which is toxic to the liver. Also eliminate from your diet-refined sugar and anything containing caffeine. To ensure an adequate supply of basic nutrients, take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement daily. Choose a capsule or soft gel-cap form for best absorption. Colostrum has been shown to strengthen immune function and improve digestion. Take 500 milligrams three to four times daily. Lipoic acid is an antioxidant that helps to improve liver function. Take 100 milligrams daily. The combination of magnesium and malic acid helps to initiate the Krebs cycle, a series of enzyme reactions that results in the conversion of nutrients into energy at the cellular level. If fatigue is a problem, take 100 milligrams of magnesium and 300 milligrams of malic acid one hour before breakfast. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids have anti-inflammatory properties. Take 500 milligrams five to six times daily. This can reduce the duration of jaundice. If you have a sensitive stomach, choose an esterified form. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant. Choose a product containing mixed tocopherols and take 200 international units in the morning and again at bedtime.

Breifly explain about jaundice?

The liver handles the disposal and cleaning of bilirubinfrom the system. Bilirubin is a bile pigment -- yellow/brown -- that occurs as a natural result of the degradation of heme. When liver failure occurs, either chronically or temporarily, bilrubin is not disposed of, and eventually results in jaundice. also known as icterus (attributive adjective: "icteric"), is a yellowish discoloration of thealso known as icterus(attributive adjective: "icteric"), is a yellowish discoloration of the skin , sclarae (whites of the eyes) and mucous membranes caused by hyperbilirubinemia (increased levels of bilirubin in the blood). This hyperbilirubinemia subsequently causes increased levels of bilirubin in the extracellular fluids. Typically, the concentration of bilirubin in the plasma must exceed 1.5 mg/dL[1], three times the usual value of approximately 0.5mg/dL[1], for the coloration to be easily visible. Jaundice comes from the French word jaune, meaning yellow.

What is the cause of pruritis in jaundice?

In jaundice there is depostion of billirubin and bile salts in the skin, the billirubin gives the yellow color and the salts is the reason of pruritis.

Is jaundice serious?

Extremely. Jaundice is first noticed in the lingual frenulum (the little connecting strip you see is you lift your tongue up that connects it to the bottom of your mouth), then it is noticed in the eyes.

It is characterized by a yellowing of the skin and the above mentioned areas due to shutdown of the liver. When the liver ceases functioning properly a substance called bilirubin is no longer processed into conjugated bilirubin, and the buildup of bilirubin is what causes this yellowing effect.

If you notice this, HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER TAKE YOU OR GET TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IMMEDIATELY. This is life-threatening and WILL BE FATAL if not taken care of immediately. YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LIVER.

Liver failure can be caused by not only alcohol abuse, but also overdose (over 4000mg taken at once) of Tylenol (acetaminophen) which is the most common component of prescription medications and is used as a filling agent due to it's inert (lack of) reaction with medications. Many variables can contribute to liver failure, but alcohol and OTC overdose or the 2 most common causes as far as I am aware (disregarding diseases which effect the liver).

What Hindu ritual is believed to treat jaundice?

It is believed drinking water mixed with the hair of a red bull will help treat jaundice. With this it is believed that the yellow of the jaundice will be transferred to the red of the animals. This is followed by the patient being swabbed with yellow paste and being ceremonially bathed while three red birds were tied to the bed to absorb the poisonous yellow.

Can you pass a drug test for meth if you have jaundice?

Yes, one can pass a drug test for methamphetamine if that individual has not been using methamphetamine (or related substances, depending on the type of test).

However, if a person has been using this drug, whether or not they will pass the test depends of the frequency/amount of use and the time since the last use. Having a liver disorder can possibly change the pharmacokinetics/metabolism, and thus affect the necessary abstinence time needed to achieve a negative test result. However, there is very little research relevant to the subject, and thus giving an exact result is impossible.

What diseases may cause jaundice or cirrhosis?

Definition

Jaundice is a yellow color in the skin, mucus membranes, or eyes. The yellow color comes from bilirubin, a byproduct of old red blood cells. Jaundice is a sign of other diseases.

This article discusses the possible causes of jaundice in children and adults. For information on jaundice in very young infants, see: Newborn jaundice

Information

Common causes of jaundice in older children and adults include:

Other causes of jaundice include:

  • Cancer of the pancreas
  • Disorders present since birth that makes it hard for the body to breakdown bilirubin (such as Gilbert syndrome, Dubin-Johnson syndrome, Rotor syndrome, or Crigler-Najjar syndrome)
  • Eating poisonous mushrooms or other poisons
  • Immune disorder that mistakenly attacks healthy liver tissue (autoimmune hepatitis)
  • Liver damage caused by reduced oxygen or blood flow to the liver
  • The body destroys too many blood cells and the liver cannot handle them (hemolytic anemia)
  • Use of certain drugs, including an overdose of acetaminophen

Gallbladder and bile duct disorders that can cause jaundice include:

  • Blocked or narrowed bile ducts (by infection, tumor, stricture, or gallstones)
  • Primary biliary cirrhosis
  • Bile build up in the gallbladder because of pressure in the belly area during pregnancy (jaundice of pregnancy)

How does the body fight jaundice?

Jaundice is a sign of a malfunctioning liver. It cannot be purged; the liver problem must be dealt with. The two most common causes of liver disease are drinking alcohol and hepatitis. People with liver problems should not drink alcohol at all. It can eventually lead to need for a liver transplant to avoid death.

Why do you get jaundice from gallstones?

Gallstones can cause pancreatitis. It is statistically one of the most common causes of pancreatitis.

Gallstones are usually formed in the gallbladder (in some conditions, they may arise directly in hepatic bile ducts, but this is an uncommon occurrence related to bile duct pathology or prior cholecystectomy). One or more may be expelled into the cystic duct, and from there to the choledochal duct, which joins the main pancreatic duct (Wirsung's duct) to pass through the ampulla of Vater into the greater papilla into the second part of the duodenum. The gallstone may obstruct passage at any of these points, resulting in different clinical presentations, ranging from biliary colic to pancreatitis.
