Kareem Abdul-Jabbar appeared on October 15, 2009 for the 2009-2010 Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational quarterfinal game 2. In the Double Jeopardy round, he picked category "I Went To UCLA" for $400. The clue was "Tell your old man to drag this '70s UCLA & Trail Blazer center (& Lanier!) up and down the court for 48 minutes." KAJ replied, "Who is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar?" Alex replied, "No! (laughing) You're the one who delivered the line, but it was about Bill Walton... Embarrassing moments on Jeopardy!" KAJ looked totally confused.

For those who have no idea what this is referring to, in the 1980 film "Airplane" he said that quote to a few children. The Jeapardy question was asking who he was talking about (Bill Walton) when he thought they are talking about who said it. And it made perfect sense because Kareem went to UCLA.

Sure the show was taped long before they air the program. You might mean "Did they know in advance that the question was going to be asked?" That's like asking if the show is a total fraud that passes out a list of questions and tells the contestants to study them. In truth, for the contestants, it's sort of like The Tonight Show's 'sidewalk all-stars'. The sketch is funny because most of us know the answer to the question Jay is asking. Many of the answers to the Jeopardy questions are known by all three contestants, but only one wins a chance to answer by ringing in first. Remember, they are on the show because they pride themselves on being able to answer trivia questions. They would not like to have the questions passed out ahead of time to everyone because they feel they would lose their advantage. So, in a sense, they know the answer to the question before the team of writers for Jeopardy even made up the question. With travel and lodging as high as it is some of the 3rd place finishers lose money for the chance to be on the show.

So, you better hope your memory is on point and your random knowledge is ready to shine when Alex Trebek hits you with those categories. It's like a pop quiz, but with way more pressure and way bigger stakes.

The show starts with the words "This is Jeopardy".

Of the three contestants, the one who finishes with the most money wins the game and gets to keep the money. The contestant who finishes in second place receives $2000 and the third place finisher receives $1000. The winner of the show gets to return to play two new challengers. If the returning champion wins, that day's winnings are added to his previous winnings. If he finishes in second place, he receives $2000 for that game in addition to his previous winnings, if he finishes in third place, he receives $1000 plus previous winnings.
