How do you change vari drive in a john deere 212?
If you mean the belts, you must first remove the front by getting the variator farthest forward and releasing the guide covers (usually a rotating little clip at the shaft and a release that lets the whole bracket pivot. Then the variator must be allowed to move rearward (the speed control lever) and the sheave (pulley) on the transaxle must have the four bolts removed (1/4" bolts, 7/16" wrench) to get clearance to get the belt off (will not clear the frame with out taking the sheave loose.) It can then be removed from the variator. Be sure to check the center moveable piece of the variator for free side-to-side movement. Wise to lube it sparingly with 30Wt and wipe excess.
Assembly is done in the reverse order. belts are always replaced as a set. Be sure to check variator when both belts are off (only time to do it.)
good luck!
Why was John Deere important to midwestern farmers?
John Deere was the inventor of the Steel plow. This plow was self cleaning and didn't wear as fast as the iron plow or wooden plow that farmers were using during that time. The Steel plow was also much lighter in weight to the iron plow.
In the midwest there was plenty of rich fertile black soil but it was under all the prairie grass that had grown over the years. The wooden plow wouldn't work because it had to be constantly cleaned in order to plow. The steel plow could plow the prairie grass under and self clean the moldboard so the farmer could continue without stopping.

A serial number is basically a record of production of whatever is serial numbered. This number is mostly used to date equipment for parts, repairs, etc. This number can be researched and some information can sometimes be found out, such as where the equipment was shipped and the original equipment installed on the equipment.
In reference to so-called 'serial numbers' on John Deere pedal tractors, this is most likely just a stock number or part number for the entire pedal tractor. For example, to order a pedal tractor, it would be ordered by this stock number which is stamped on all similar pedal tractors and more than likely on the outside of the box the pedal tractor is packaged in.

How do you know when riding mower deck spindles are bad?
Normally you will start to hear a loud grumbling sound from underneath the mower when the blades are engaged.
With the mower shut off, release the tension from the belt for the blades. Raise the deck so you can grab the blades from the bottom. You should not be able to rock the blades from side to side or up and down. If you can then you probably have a bad spindle. You can do this for wach of the spindles to check them all.
