Where is John the Baptist mentioned in the Bible?

None.

Answer:In the King James version, the word appears fifteen times, all in association with John the Baptist.

Was John the Baptist killed on his birthday?

No - none of the accounts of the Massacre of the Innocents suggest John the Baptist died in it (it would be odd if he had, as then he would not be able to baptise Jesus later in life).

The Massacre of the Innocents is at Matthew 2:16-18, but does not record any reference to John the Baptist.

The story is not mentioned by the contemporary Jewish historian Josephus, nor in the other gospels, nor in the early apocrypha. Its first appearance in any source other than Matthew being the 2nd century being in the Protoevangelium of James of c.150 AD, which excludes the Flight into Egypt and switches the attention of the story to the infant John the Baptist. In relation to John, it states:

  • "And when Herod knew that he had been mocked by the Magi, in a rage he sent murderers, saying to them: Slay the children from two years old and under. And Mary, having heard that the children were being killed, was afraid, and took the infant and swaddled Him, and put Him into an ox-stall. And Elizabeth, having heard that they were searching for John, took him and went up into the hill-country, and kept looking where to conceal him. And there was no place of concealment. And Elizabeth, groaning with a loud voice, says: O mountain of God, receive mother and child. And immediately the mountain was cleft, and received her. And a light shone about them, for an angel of the Lord was with them, watching over them."

Most recent biographers of Herod therefore do not regard the massacre as an actual historical event, but rather, like the other nativity stories, as creative hagiography. The gospel of Matthew was most likely written circa 80 - 85 AD by an anonymous Christian appealing to a Jewish audience. The author's goal was to portray Jesus as the Jewish Messiah, the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy, and a greater Moses.

What deserts did John the Baptist live?

He lived by himself to be away from people until his mission was to occur which was to be the forerunner for the Messiah/Christ/Anointed One. Just like Elijah will be the forerunner for Messiah's return back to earth to get us. And as Elijah is gone now and we won't see him until the time is right for him to come with Enoch as one of the 2 witnesses...John was absent until he was preparing the pathway for YAHVEH so says Isaiah 40:3 and so YHVH our God came in the body of a human called Yeshua-(aka Jesus) known as Immanuel(God with us), Here's how Isaiah reads: The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of YAHVEH, make straight in the desert a highway for our Elohim(God). And here's the Hebrew word for wilderness/desert Strings #H4057 מדבּר midbâr mid-bawr' From H1696(daw-bar) in the sense of driving;a pasture (that is, open field, whither cattle are driven); by implication a desert; also speech (including its organs): - desert, south, speech, wilderness.

What was John the Baptist's weakness?

Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?"
John the Baptist is still not sure about Jesus. (He's in prison and is soon to die.) He sends his disciples to ask, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" Well, if he isn't sure after seeing and hearing the events at Jesus' baptism, then how can anyone else be?

How did John the Baptist follow Jesus?

Do you mean: in the semi-historical-but-largely-unsubstantiated writings known collectively as the Christian New Testament (whose main figure, known as Jesus of Nazareth, was completely unmentioned by well-traveled contemporary scholars), what happened after John the Baptist baptized Jesus?

Apparently, after the baptism: the heavens opened, the holy spirit descends like a dove, and a heavenly voice acclaims Jesus is his Son. Then Jesus went into the wilderness where the devil tempted him, and when he returned he began his ministry. Curiously, in the Gospel of John, he identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God, but there is no mention of Jesus' baptism.

Are John the Baptist and John the Disciple two different people?

Before surnames were common, people were usually named after their parents, family, occupation, or singularity, so although there were two men called 'John' they were completely different people: one was a prophet who baptized people and the other was a follower,or 'disciple', of Jesus Christ.

Why did Jesus not visit John the Baptist in prison?

It could have somthing to do with the fact that jesus had to totally rely upon God to lead him and take care of that which he had no control over ,Jesus left because he had to forfill his Fathers plan.

Did John the Baptist invent baptism?

Mandate of Israel:

The so-called "BAPTISM" in the Scriptures is actually a Jewish "MIKVEH". It is a purification ritual that is part of the TORAH. This ritual was assigned to Israel as part of their Mandate. This Mandate was not shared with the gentiles nor was it promised to the gentiles. The church in attempting to usurp the authority and mandate of Israel, adapted this ritual, paganized it and used it against Israel. This is part of the deception that the church spread throughout the world. They used this ritual to reinforce amongst the ignorant and the careless that the church is the congregation of Yeshua, Maschiach (Christ) of Israel. Yeshuah is not the Christ of the church, nor is the church the congregation of Yeshua. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the Office of the Maschiach (Christ) of the Congregation of Israel!

I can find no reference to any baptisms taking place before John. One must remember however that Adam held the Hight Priesthood and so held the authority to baptise. He also knew that Christ would come to the earth and preach His gospel. Adam preached the gospel to his children and as baptism is a covenant to obey the law there is nothing to contradict the fact that baptisms were performed before John.

What Bible verse sais John the Baptist eats locusts?

It is conjectured that John the Baptist was raised in a remote monastery of Essene, a sect of Judaism. They lived off the land and dressed in extreme rustic clothes. That is why John was one that dressed the way that he did and was said to eat locust. He lived off the land.

Why did people come to John to be baptized?

It meant repentance and rebirth to a new life. Baptize is a word that is not translated but transliterated right out of the original language which means to be engulfed and surrounded.

Was Jesus alive when John the Baptist was beheaded?

A:According to the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), John the Baptist was executed in Galilee shortly after he baptised Jesus, traditionally in about 29 CE. Since Jesus is recorded as being born during the reign of King Herod, who died in April 4 BCE, Jesus must have been over 35 years old. John's Gospel delays the Baptist's execution until later in the mission of Jesus.

The historical account, by the first-century Jewish historian Josephus, suggests not only that John the Baptist's execution took place long after the traditional time of Jesus' crucifixion, but also that it took place in faraway Macherus and not necessarily by beheading. Josephus confirms that the reason for John's arrest was his public criticism of Herod Antipas' marriage to his own brother's former wife. The wedding took place in 34 CE and Antipas ordered John to be executed in 35 or 36 CE, out of fear that he was stirring the Jews up for rebellion. The relevant text from Book 18 of Antiquities of the Jews:

"Now many people came in crowds to him, for they were greatly moved by his words. Herod, who feared that the great influence John had over the masses might put them into his power and enable him to raise a rebellion (for they seemed ready to do anything he should advise), thought it best to put him to death. In this way, he might prevent any mischief John might cause, and not bring himself into difficulties by sparing a man who might make him repent of it when it would be too late. Accordingly John was sent as a prisoner, out of Herod's suspicious temper, to Macherus, the castle I already mentioned, and was put to death."

On the historical information, Jesus must have already been dead when John the Baptist was executed.

Why is John the Baptist known as the precursor?

A 'precursor' (all one word) is a person or thing that comes before another of the same kind, who/which is usually greater than the precursor. The word comes from the Latin word prae (meaning beforehand) and currere (meaning to run) which means to run before.

Where John the Baptist baptized people?

Basically John baptized in the area of the Jordan River, a particularly sacred place to Israel. The Israelites crossed over the Jordan into the Promised Land, a picture of final deliverance.

Elisha had told Naaman, the general of the Syrian Army who had leprosy, to "Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean." 2 Kings 5:10. Naaman balked at this, thinking that the rivers in his homeland were much better than the muddy Jordan. Yet when his servants reasoned with him as to the simplicity of the command, he washed in Jordan & he was healed.

In John 3:23, it tells us that John the Baptist "was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there..." This was very close to the Jordan. Some think, however, that it may have been one of the small lakes spawned by the Wadi Farah, as backwaters leading into the Jordan. Nonetheless, it was associated with the Jordan.

When Jesus was baptized, Matthew 3:13 states: "Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. With over 300 prophesies of the Old Testament fulfilled in Christ's first coming to earth, this appears to have much significance also. When John thought it should have been Christ who baptized him, Jesus said: "Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness." v. 15. The Jordan was a special place to the Kingdom of God, picturing deliverance from the bondage of the old way of life & an ushering into the new way of life, which opens the promised land of eternal life. The Biblical form of baptism (immersion) provides this same picture. Romans 6:3-11.

Who did John the Baptist help prepare a path for the lord?

John the Baptist was baptizing in obedience to God. God had commanded John to perform what's referred to as a "baptism of repentance," to prepare the way for the coming Messiah. In effect, John was "helping" God, the Jews, and Christ as well.

What is the description of John the Baptist?

John lived in the wilderness (Mark 1:4) and he wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey (Mark 1:6). This passage gives us an image of John the Baptist as a prophet.

What are the traits of John the Baptist?

John the Baptist. Son of Zacharias and Elisabeth, being of priestly descent through both parents. This lineage was essential, since John was the embodiment of the law of Moses, designed to prepare the way for the Messiah and make ready a people to receive him. He was the outstanding bearer of the Aaronic Priesthood in all history, and was entrusted with its most noble mission.

His forthcoming birth and the nature of his ministry were announced to John's father by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:5-25). He was a child of promise, with prophecies of his mission having been given by Isaiah (40:3) and Malachi (3:1; He grew up in the desert until the time arrived for his ministry to prepare the way for the Savior.

When did John the Baptist start baptising people?

The answer to your question is given in the first chapter of the book of Luke.

Verse 13: " But the angel said unto him fear not Zacharias; for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

Verse 14: And thou shalt have Joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

Verse 15: For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mothers womb."

So the answer to your question is that John started his ministry from his Mothers womb as the Holy Spirit was with him from that time.

Where did Herod and John the Baptist meet?

A:According to the gospels, Herod Antipas had John the Baptist was arrested and held in prison early in the mission of Jesus, probably around 29 CE. Herod Antipas' wife, Herodias, had a quarrel with John the Baptist and would have killed him if she could but, at a royal party in Galilee for the senior men of the kingdom, told her daughter to ask for his head on a platter. For John's head to be brought to the party during the course of a party, he must have been placed in a prison somewhere nearby, in Galilee.

This account differs from that of the Jewish historian Josephus, who says that Herod Antipas had the Baptist arrested and killed in the castle of Macherus, east of the Dead Sea, because he disapproved of Antipas' marriage to his own brother's wife, who divorced her husband in order to marry Herod Antipas. The wedding took place in 34 CE and the execution of John would have been in 35 or 36 CE.

What was John the Baptist denomination?

Based on the Gospel description of his dress and diet, some think that John was an Essene.

The Mandaeans, a small sect of which only about 20,000 followers remain in southern Iraq and in a worldwide diaspora, claim John the Baptist as one of their own, saying that he founded their religion. They believe that Jesus was originally a disciple of John the Baptist.

Where was John the Baptist beheaded?

The location is not specified in the Bible, but according to Josephus it was at the Fortress of Machaerus near the Dead Sea.

Answer

Although the gospels do not actually say so, John the Baptist must have been beheaded in Galilee, north of Israel, since this is described as happening at a party for the leading men of Galilee on the occasion of Herod Antipas' birthday (Mark 6:21). Herod would scarcely have demanded that the lords and high captains treck on foot or donkey all the way down to the lonely castle of Macherus just for a party.

However, Josephus does make it clear that John was imprisoned and executed in Macherus, which is to the east of the Dead Sea.

How did John the Baptist's mother die?

Another answer from our community:

Elizabeth, wife of Zachariah.

Luke 1:5 (KJV): There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Luke 1:13 (KJV): But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

What makes St. John the Baptist special?

Mandate of Israel:

He was a Torah observant Jew. He tried to exhort Israel to remain in the Covenant and not to be contaminated with the worship of angels like the neighboring nations.

When he met Yeshua, he recognized him as the Maschiach (Christ) of Israel who was promised in the Tanach (old testament) by Adonai to Israel. He would have been living a way of life that was compatible with the Torah teachings. He was not a Christian of the context of the church. He would have been a messianic Jew, a true christian according to the Bible.

A messianic (christian) believer is one who is in the faith of Israel, not outside of it.

He was a baptist

When is John the Baptist's feast day?

We do not know the actual date but it is celebrated on June 24 since scripture tells us he was born about 6 months before Our Lord.

However, since December 25th was actually the birthday of the Roman sun god Mithras, the early church decided to make that Jesus' official day of birth to make the transition to Christianity easier for the Pagans. Jesus was most likely born around 1 October, making John's birthday probably around early April.

How many Baptist denominations are there?

There are quite a number of Baptist organizations today. The main governing distinctive of these churches is that they hold to the autonomy (independent rule) of the local church. Therefore some of the groups have organized because of location. Others have developed over controversy, as had happened in other groups considered as denominations: Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, etc.
