As a young man, he enjoyed playing American football, athletics and body-surfing, although an accident whilst taking part in the latter sport put paid to a possible sporting career. He also never allowed social causes to be mixed up with his political views, being a strong supporter of animal welfare with a particular fondness for dogs. Like many cowboy actors he loved a good drink, enjoyed shooting and marksmanship, and had an eye for pretty ladies!
