What was Joseph smith's professional or working career before he found the golden plates?
Joseph, at the time he received the plates, was quite young. He hadn't really had time to establish a "career" of his own, per se'. He actually held several short-term jobs prior to receiving the plates. However, we know he was a farmer by way of his parental family's farm. He was taught the art of farming by his father and mother, and likely his older brother(s). Joseph was known for his physical abilities to work, and was hired to do many menial tasks, such as chopping fire wood, splitting rails, digging wells, and the like. He was also known for his desire to maintain tools in their best possible working condition. For example, many of his neighbors loved to loan him their tools, which he often received in some state of needing improvement. An ax, for example, might need a new handle or need sharpening. Joseph would usually return the item repaired and sharp.
When did Joseph Smith have the first vison?
Joseph Smith's first vision occured "early in the spring of 1820" according to his own account.
No, Joseph Smith was not a racist. He believed that all people are the children of God and should be treated with equal love and respect. The Book of Mormon even says that "[The Lord] denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female;... and all are alike unto God." (2 Nephi 26:33)
Freed slaves were welcome to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and several did. They were treated the same as white Church members.

Did Joseph smith make everything up?
This is a matter of belief and opinion.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will tell you no, he was not making it up.
Someone who is not a member of the Church will most likely tell you yes, although I do know a few people who believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet and not making it up, but are not members of the Church. My best advice is to learn more about him and his life. Do your research, and talk to both members of the church and those who are not members, then, form your own opinion. If it is important to you, try praying about it. If God really did visit Joseph Smith and lead him to make the Church, He would tell you so if you asked.

Why was Joseph Smith a controversial figure?
Joseph Smith, Jr. was a controversial figure because he identified himself as a prophet. As early as 14, he claimed to be visited by the resurrected Jesus Christ and by various other Biblical figures, such as Peter, James, John, and Adam. Many of his followers fell away because he was also a normal guy, throwing parties for neighbors, doing yardwork, and teaching games to the neighbor kids. They felt that a man who was receiving visitations from God should act much more pious and spend most of his time in the church building.
And so, to those outside the Church, he was controversial because of his religious teachings, and to those inside of the Church, he was controversial because of his lack of religiousity.
Also in part that most of his proof of the golden tablets received by the angel were never seen. He dictated the tablet writings while reading them in a hat to obscure it from his friend who wrote the book of Mormon. Because of this, many of his claims were hearsay where as many prophets before him proved themselves through miracles with witnesses.
In fact, the golden plates were seen by 11 men and held or carried while covered by a cloth by several others, including Joseph's wife. Their testimony of seeing and handling the plates is included in every modern copy of the Book of Mormon.
Except for his followers, Joseph Smith had a terrible reputation among the ordinary American citizen. It was cruel that he and his brother were murdered while in prison in Missouri. One huge complaint was his belief in polygamy.

How did Joseph Smith show courage?
if you're talking about the Joseph Smith that was the first leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints (Mormons) then he showed courage in a lot of ways. When he was a kid and had a knee opporation and didn't take alchohol to make him not feel pain cause it was against his church, when he was wrongfully imprisoned and still showed faith in his god, the only god, and then again when he jumped from a window to save his friend's lives (which he was successful in doing) and was shot and killed, and when he was tared and feathered because people didn't like his church.
Was Joseph smith into divination?
Joseph Smith was raw, uneducated material, and he tried lots of things during his life in his effort to understand the nature of the world and his particular gifts. If and when he tried divination (as in a divining rod or objects like a seer stone), one can be fairly certain it was out of curiosity and that he grew out of that curiosity as he gained maturity and insight. (A seer stone appears to have been used in connection with the Urim and Thummim for translation of ancient texts and is understood to be a tool for that purpose.)
Joseph smith wanted to build an ideal society?
Joseph Smith sought to build 'Zion', an ideal society where everyone treated each other with Christian kindness and all things were shared in common. While several attempts were made, the cruelty of outsiders and the jealousy and pride of church members made this a goal that was never realized. Modern Mormons believe that while they should strive to live up to such ideals, the full vision of a 'Zion' community will not exist until the Millennium.

Who was john marshall and Joseph smith?
John Marshall: John Marshall (September 24, 1755 - July 6, 1835) was an American statesman and jurist who shaped American constitutional law and made the Supreme Court a center of power. Marshall was Chief Justice of the United States, serving from February 4, 1801, until his death in 1835. He served in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1799, to June 7, 1800, and, under President John Adams, was Secretary of State from June 6, 1800, to March 4, 1801. Marshall was from the Commonwealth of Virginia and a leader of the Federalist Party. The longest serving Chief Justice in Supreme Court history, Marshall dominated the Court for over three decades (a term outliving his own Federalist Party) and played a significant role in the development of the American legal system. Most notably, he established that the courts are entitled to exercise judicial review, the power to strike down laws that violate the Constitution. Thus, Marshall has been credited with cementing the position of the judiciary as an independent and influential branch of government. Furthermore, Marshall made several important decisions relating to Federalism, shaping the balance of power between the federal government and the states during the early years of the republic. In particular, he repeatedly confirmed the supremacy of federal law over state law and supported an expansive reading of the enumerated powers. Joseph Smith: Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805 - June 27, 1844) was the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism, and an important religious and political figure during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1827, Smith began to gather a religious following after announcing that an angel had shown him a set of golden plates describing a visit of Jesus to the indigenous peoples of the Americas. In 1830, Smith published what he said was a translation of these plates as the Book of Mormon. The same year he organized a new church, which he called the Church of Christ. For most of the 1830s, Smith lived in Kirtland, Ohio, which remained the headquarters of the church until the cost of building a large temple and financial collapse encouraged him to gather the church to the Latter Day Saint settlement in Missouri. There, tensions between church members and non-Mormons escalated into the 1838 Mormon War. Smith and his followers then settled in Nauvoo, Illinois where they began building a second temple aided by new converts from Europe. After being accused of practicing polygamy and of aspiring to create a theocracy, Smith took part in the decision of the Nauvoo City Council to suppress a newspaper that had published accusations against him, leading to his assassination by a mob of non-Mormons. Joseph Smith's legacy includes several religious denominations with adherents numbering in the millions, denominations that share a belief in Jesus but that vary in their acceptance of each other and of traditional Christianity. Smith's followers consider him a prophet and believe that some of his revelations are sacred texts on par with the Bible.
When did Joseph Smith start the Mormon religion?
