Christopher Meloni, the actor who plays Stabler, could not negotiate a new contract for season 13 of SVU. The script handled the situation by saying that Stabler had quit. Elliott didn't appear, his resignation was discussed by the other characters so we would know why he wasn't there. That's a good sign because they didn't kill him off. It's possible that, if he can negotiate a contract for guest appearances we may see him on the show again.

The show Law and Order: Criminal Intent is not being cancelled in the near future. The series has moved to USA network from NBC. Renewal for an eighth season is in the works now. There is some debate on the length of the season, however. USA network wants sixteen episodes while Dick Wolf wants twenty-two.

It's always hard to really know the reasons behind the cast changes on Law and Order series.
