March Madness

The schools that participate in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship vary across the United States.

Ironically, "March Madness" (as the NCAA men's basketball tournament has come to be known) is designed such that the Championship Game is always played on the first Monday in April. (I guess the madness is considered to have quieted itself by the time only two teams remain.)

Kentucky has won over 2000 games in its legendary NCAA history. 2052 as of 11-7-11, The most of any NCAA team in any division. They also lead all schools in winning percentage at 76%. Their all time record is 2052-647

The final four Game is Saturday, April 2, 2011. The championship game will be Monday, April 4, 2011.

I think the University of Alabama in Tuscalusa, Al still holds the record of 14 National championships. They haven't won it in a long time though so someone may have taken the record from them.

1.) They can automatically qualify by winning their conference tournament title or, in the case of the conferences that don't have conference touraments such as the Ivy League, they can qualify by winning their conference's regular season title.

2.) By having a high enough RPI to get one of the 33 at-large bids. The RPI considers the team's record and their performance against quality (or not-so-quality) opponents.

3.) By not getting caught violating the NCAA rules.

Through Super Bowl XLII, Don Shula (SBs III, VI, XVII, and XIX), Marv Levy (SBs XXV, XXVI, XXVII, and XXVIII), and Dan Reeves (SBs XXI, XXII, XXIV, and XXXIII) each have been the head coach of four Super Bowl losing teams.

Ray Allen (Boston Celtics) is the best quick-release shooter, and probably the best 3 point shooter too.

If you want a team that can shoot 3-pointers though, 3 point shooting teams like Orlando Magic would work well as nearly everyone (Except Dwight Howard) is a good long range shooter.

Michigan State has had 22 NCAA Tourney appearances. They curently sit 28th on the the all-time list.

If my information is correct, there have been 11 split national championships as awarded by the AP and UPI (now BCS) since 1954, although most probably only remember back to 1978. Starting that year, it was (AP Champ/UPI-BCS Champ):

Through 2013, the NCAA men's basketball tournament has been won once (1959) by UC (University of California-Berkeley), which is more commonly known as "California" or "Cal-Berkeley."

Another UC (Cincinnati) has won two of these titles (1961 and 1962). Nationally, the school is known more commonly as "Cincinnati," but regionally there are many who refere to it as "UC."

Connecticut is commonly called "UConn," both locally and nationally, but it is in fact another "UC." The school has won three men's titles: 1999, 2004 and 2011.
