When the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth they wrote to Mayflower Compact ( it was written on the ship they were on named the Mayflower) as a means to govern their new colony.

The Mayflower Compact was created on board of the Mayflower. It strived to bring together the different groups of people on board to come together to form a peaceful community in the wilderness. The people all had different ideas and quarreled among eachother. This document put an end to the quarreling and bounded the Pilgrims together by laws they had created and agreed on.

The Mayflower Compact is important because of its principle, that a government's authority derives from the consent of the governed. The signers of the Compact stated that the authority to make laws in the colony was also based on the fact that the inhabitants consented to be subject to those laws. The Plymouth Colony became the most democratic colony at that time, since every adult male head of household was a shareholder in the company and had the right to vote for governor of the colony.

In 1620 women had no rights and therefore couldn't make decisions nor sign the compact. Women didn't have the right to vote in the United States until 1920's and that was after a great deal of effort. Women's rights have been slow in coming. In the 1970's women still couldn't get a credit card in their name. In the 1980's the first woman was able to become a fighter pilot. Girls in sports has also changed. In the 1960's there were very few sports that girls to do, but with the passage of Title 9 women's and girls sport teams get more money.
