Memorial Day

Since 1971 Memorial Day has been observed on the last Monday in the month of May. From 1868 to 1970 it was observed on May 30 of every year irregardless of what day of the week that was. Before 1967 Memorial Day was officially called Decoration Day.

There is no other name for Memorial Day. It began years ago as "Decoration Day" but is not longer referred to as that.

I don't have a complete list of those presidents that were at other places than Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day but here are some recent times when that was the case:

-President Ronald Reagan was in office for eight years and only went to Arlington four times. In 1981 he was recovering from being shot. In 1983 he was in Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1988 he was in Moscow.

-President George H. W. Bush was in office for four years and never went to Arlington once. He was in Maine three of those times and in Rome the fourth time.

-In 2002 President George W. Bush was at Normandy in France on Memorial Day.

-President Barack Obama was in Chicago in 2010.

Memorial Day began as "Decoration Day", on May 30th, 1868 as a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers from the Civil War and grew into a day to remember service men and women who died in any American wars. It was made a federal holiday in 1971 by President Nixon and moved to the last Monday of May.

The very first Memorial Day was in 1868 to honor the fallen heroes of the US Civil War.

Since then the US has unfortunately participated in many wars in order to defend and protect our country, aid our allies and protect innocent people around the world.

Whether you agree with our participation in past wars or not, does not matter- this holiday is important to honor and recognize the men and women soldiers who have given up their lives and experienced great injury in order to protect you and your freedom in the US.
