Menstruation

Menstruation is the routine discharge, or release, of blood and mucosal tissue from the uterus. This process occurs about once a month from the time a female reaches puberty until menopause. During pregnancy, the monthly menstrual cycle is absent while the womb nourishes the growing fetus.

Why does your period last so long?

Your period last usually 4-6 days. It takes that long because your body has to get out all of the blood and padding that provides support for the egg in the uterus. Once the egg is not fertilized, there is no need for the padding, so it goes away. Its only way out is your vagina.

* If your period last longer than 6 days, you may want to consult a doctor.

Why is not lining is coming out with your period just blood?

When you have your period, the lining of your uterus sheds along with blood. This lining is made up of tissue and blood vessels that build up in the uterus each month in preparation for a potential pregnancy. When fertilization does not occur, this lining is shed during menstruation, resulting in a mixture of blood and tissue being released out of the body.

How do the estrous and menstrual cycles compare?

The estrous cycle occurs in most mammals, including dogs and cats, and is typically shorter and more predictable than the menstrual cycle in humans. In the estrous cycle, females are only sexually receptive during a specific period, while in the menstrual cycle in humans, women are sexually receptive throughout the cycle but can only conceive during ovulation.

The Moon.

The word "menstruation" is etymologically related to "moon". The terms "menstruation" and "menses" are derived from the Latin mensis (month), which in turn relates to the Greek mene (moon) and to the roots of the English words month and moon-reflecting the fact that the moon also takes close to 28 days to revolve around the Earth (actually 27.32 days). The synodical lunar month, the period between two new moons (or full moons), is 29.53 days long.

Why do muds lose more volume during compaction than sands do?

Sand is deposited as single touching rigid grains. The

porosity

is the space remaining between the touching grains, and is not reduced significantly by compaction until pressures cause the sand grains to break or to undergo chemical changes such as diagenesis. In diagenesis the sand grains will dissolve and redeposit changing the volume and porosity of the sandstone.

Mud can have 60-80% original porosity, before compaction while sand porosity is normally below 45-50% when originally deposited. The reason mud is so different is that it has an open fabric that can hold water within the mud floccules, which are groups of clay platelets held together by

ionic attraction

(and not gravity). Clay platelets in the mud form a "house of cards" type structure due to the ionic attraction between them and create this open system that can hold more water than mud initially.

Does having discharge means your period is coming?

Not necessarily. Vaginal discharge is a common occurrence throughout the menstrual cycle. Some women may experience an increase in discharge before their period, while others may not notice a change. It's important to track other symptoms like cramping, bloating, and mood swings to predict the arrival of your period.

Do men have menstrual cycles?

Is the brown stuff on your underwear your period?

The brown stuff may be your period.

Brown or pink discharge is commonly refered to as 'spotting' it is when small amounts of blood mix with your normal vaginal discharge - spotting is often a result of hormonal changes in your body so it may occur as your body is getting ready to start menstruating over the next few months. Spotting can also be the start of your period; your period is when uterus lining sheds, it doesn't all come out in one go so it starts off very light like this and usually ends as spotting like this too.

The only way to tell if this is your period or not is to see whether it continues over the next 3-7 days - if it is your period it is likely to get at least a little heavier, if not change from brown discharge to full bleeding. Either way if this is the first time you're seeing something like this let your mom or guardian know that it may be your first period.

When you experience spotting like this it's a good idea to put on a liner or a pad, you can also use menstrual cups or softcups, but do not ever use tampons with spotting as there's not enough blood to use tampons safely. Also change your underwear, before putting into the laundry rinse out with cold water and also if stained soak in water with hydrogen peroxide in - your mom or guardian can help you with this.

Can your sperm get washed out by your period?

This is somthing that is commonly believed. However, I have read up on such things as these, and in my research (along with many others' research), that no, sperm cannot be "washed out" by your period. I'm lead to believe this because a woman/girl can become pregnant when/if she participates in intercourse during her cycle. On most occasions, however, this will not happen. I've never actually heard of someone becoming pregnant during her period. I hope this information has been helpful!

Why are there only a few days in each menstrual cycle when fertilisation can take place?

In order for fertilization to take place, there must be an egg available to be fertilized. So, fertilization can take place between an egg being released, travelling down the fallopian tube, and arriving at the uterus. Once an egg arrives at the uterus, if it is not fertilized, then the body takes steps to get rid of it (menstruation). It only takes a few days for the egg to get to the uterus after being released, so those few days are the only ones when the egg can be fertilized.
