A contest was held in 1965 to find the name of the new Miami franchise for the American Football League. 19,843 entries were submitted with over a thousand different names. A dozen finalists were screened through by a seven-member committee made up of the local media, names considered included the Mariners, Marauders, Mustangs, Missiles, Moons, Sharks, and Suns. The winning name, "Dolphins," was submitted by 622 entrants. Mrs. Robert Swanson of West Miami won lifetime passes to Dolphin games when her nickname entry successfully predicted the winner and score of the 1965 football game between Notre Dame and the University of Miami, a scoreless tie.

She owns a part of it , together with ex Marc Anthony.

Bob Griese; Bob Griese started the season as the primary quarterback but suffered a fractured leg and dislocated ankle in Game 5 of the 1972 season against the San Diego Chargers. Griese was replaced by Earl Morrall who started all of the games up to and including the AFC championship game against the Steelers. Morrall was replaced by Griese in the second half of the game and was the starter in the Super Bowl.

The 1983 Super Bowl XVII was played on January 30, at the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena, California.

Warm winter weather.

The NFL has, until recently, wanted the Super Bowl played in a warm weather city so as to not have winter conditions, mainly snow and frigid cold, play a part in the outcome of the game. Also, since the Super Bowl is a big media event and corporate event, it is beneficial for the NFL to have these folks going to a warm weather city instead of somewhere where the average temperature requires a heavy overcoat.

Through the first 45 Super Bowls, only 3 have been played in a cold weather city ... two in Detroit and one in Minneapolis. But, since these cities have domed stadiums, weather did not play a part in the outcome of the game. Super Bowl XLVI (46) is scheduled to be played in Indianapolis but they also have a domed stadium.

The first Super Bowl that will be played 'in the elements', so to speak. will be XLVIII (48) scheduled for the non-domed MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey in February, 2014.

No. The Dolphins play the Cowboys based on the NFL's present (post-2002) scheduling rotation of inter-conference (AFC vs. NFC) games. The NFC East (Dallas Cowboys) play the AFC East (Dolphins) every four years - they played in 2003 and again in 2007. The Dolphins will play the Cowboys again (barring an appearance in Superbowl 45) in 2011.

Jan Stenerud was the Kicker for the Chiefs in the Super Bowl 1967. He was born on November 26, 1942 in Fetsund, Norway and went to college at Montana State University. He made 21 field goal in the season of 1967 with 373 career field goals.

Well the reason Dan Marino never won the super bowl is simple that he never had a running game.You can have a good passing game but if you don't have a running game you probably won't win it all.

It wasn't just the fault of the running game. Dan Marino MADE the Super Bowl in 1985, but performed poorly. In a 38 to 16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, he threw two interceptions, and only one touchdown- well below expectations placed on him after a stellar season.

Later in his career, Dan Marino's impact on the Dolphins shrunk considerably as new coach, Jimmy Johnson, believed in a strong run game, and a quarterback whose primary purpose is to hand the ball off.
