Installing Mods (Windows)
To begin, you will need an archive utility application, such as WinZip, WinRAR, 7-Zip, or something similar. You may already have a suitable application. If not, the download link to WinRAR can be found under "Sources and related links" below this answer.
To install Mods in Minecraft, you will need to locate your Minecraft application data.
- Go to the start menu, and type into the search bar.
- A folder named "Roaming" should appear as a search option. Click on this option to open the folder in a new window.
- In the new window, there should be a folder named ".minecraft". Open this folder.
- Your Minecraft application data is located within your .minecraft folder.
You may pin the Roaming folder to Windows Explorer in the task bar for ease of future access.
Before installing any mods, be sure to back-up your Minecraft save files. Installing mods can potentially corrupt your saves, so you should always have copies of your save files stored on your computer. To back-up your files, simply copy your savesfolder and paste it into a clearly labeled folder. To restore these saves, simply copy the previous saves folder back into your .minecraft folder.
What you're going to do is to copy all the mod files into the minecraft.jar file. To do that you first need to extract the mod you downloaded. This can be done with WinRAR. Go to your downloads folder, right click the mod and extract it to somewhere you remember (I have a folder on My Documents named "Minecraft mods" where I have all mods and texture packs). And now you need to find the minecraft.jar file. This file is located in the bin folder in .minecraft.
On Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP, click the little icon in the bottom left corner, type in "Run" on the search bar and type in. Now a window will open. Open "Roaming", ".minecraft" and then "bin". You migtht come directly to the Roaming folder. If you do you can just go directly to the .minecraft folder and then bin.
On Mac it's very simple. Just go to this location: /Users/~Library/Application Support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar where ~ is your username.
I recommend that you make a back-up of the minecraft.jar file, since we are going to edit it. If the mod is fake, you might need to delete the whole file. Copy minecraft.jar to a location that you remember (maybe in the same folder as the mods you extracted?).
Now open the minecraft.jar file with WinRAR, and you'll have a list of many files. Copy all the files that you extracted and paste them into this list, and select "Add and replace files". Once you have done this, delete the folder named META-INF.
