PC - Some mods require 'Modloader' or 'Forge' to use, but some don't need either and can be installed alongside Vanilla (your basic non-modded) Minecraft as add-ons. This is the basic rule for accessing the correct folder to modify. Always backup your original file before modifying to make sure you don't mess up and end up with a broken game, and always read the instructions provided by any mod creator about installing a mod and requirements.
If ModLoader/Forge is required, you'll have to install them as a prerequisite before you can install any desired mods as indicated by the mod creator; to do this, follow these instructions after downloading Forge or ModLoader (links in the sources / related links). ModLoader is pretty straightforward; with Forge, you'll want to get the universal file. Never install an outdated mod loader, this nearly always guarantees a blackscreen unless compatibility is otherwise confirmed as valid/still working by the mod creator.
- In minecraft.jar, delete META-INF. This is important; failure to do this will result in a blackscreen!
- Open your mod loader of choice, select all (ctrl + a) contents of the archive and drag them into the minecraft.jar folder; when prompted, verify to overwrite the contents of the folder. Again, this is a must.
Forge will add a new META-INF folder, while ModLoader doesn't; do not delete it, this is the modified variant required for Forge to work. Run Minecraft and ensure the game loads correctly. If it doesn't, delete minecraft.jar and restore the backed-up copy then start over; if it does, it will generate a 'Mods' folder (/.minecraft/mods) where most, if not all mods can be placed.
If the mod doesn't require either mod loader, opening the archive and extracting its contents to .minecraft.jar is usually enough, but the installation process differs based on the mod, what it does, and how it runs.
