What are the drawbacks to using mnemonic devices to remember key concepts?

Using "memory tricks" is actually a great way to improve your memory! There aren't a lot of drawbacks, as anything you do to help you remember something is a good thing. One problem people can have is forgetting the actual mnemonic device! It won't do you any good to know there's some phrase you memorized to help you remember the names of the planets in order if you can't remember what that phrase was.

Mnemonics:

Assembly languages unlike machine language consist of short symbolic phrases understandable by people. These phrases are made up of alphanumeric symbols called mnemonics.

Assembly language simplifies the programmer's job and makes it easy to find the errors. The programs written in assembly languages are efficient in their use, and run faster as they use fewer instructions.

What is the mnemonic device to remember moon phases?

If you mean what order they happen in, DOC is a fairly good graphical representation of the lighted portion (first the right side is lit and the left side is dark, then the whole thing is lit during the full moon, then the left side is lit and the right side is dark, then new moon and it starts over again).

If you mean the words (waxing, waning, gibbous, crescent, etc.) then as far as I know you just have to remember them.

add. and remember, the half-moon and the quarters have the portions in light/shade reversed as seen from the Southern Hemisphere.

It will still be the same mountains and mare illuminated, just that they will now appear on the left rather than the right.

The best way to remember the names of the phases is to understand the terms:

  • waxing means increasing (not smearing grease on your car LOL)
  • waning means decreasing
  • quarter means 1/4 - remember that 1/2 of the moon is always invisible to us because it's on the other side! Quarter moon is what we see as half a circle
  • crescent is the shape of a sickle or a sideways smile

And then you just need to memorize the weird word gibbous, which is a word that refers to the moon when it's at that stage between half-way full and full, or between half-way full and quarter full.

The phases in order from new all the way around are:

  • New Moon - the whole side of the moon is in shadow
  • Waxing Crescent - moving toward the quarter moon
  • First Quarter Moon - the half circle on the left as you look at it is in sunlight
  • Waxing Gibbous - moving toward the Full moon
  • Full Moon - the whole side of the moon is in sunlight
  • Waning Gibbous - moving toward the other quarter moon
  • Third Quarter Moon - the half circle on the right as you look at it is in sunlight (remember that the SECOND quarter moon would be the FULL one!)
  • Waning Crescent - moving toward the new moon
  • New Moon again!

I've also put a nifty link below to show this as a picture chart!

Let's see if we can come up with a mnemonic for these words:

We have: N, WxC, 1QM, WxG, FM, WnG, 3QM, WnC, N

That's a long, tricky one! My preference would still be to just learn what the actual terms mean so they make sense, but let's give the Silly Sentence a try:

This will be a dialogue between a family the day before a test!

"Ned, Wax the Car"

"First Quiz Me"

"Wax Grand-Am!"

"First Me!"

"Wax New Grand-Am!!"

"THEN (THree) Quiz Me?"

"When Car is Nice!"
