Mauna Kea (White Mountain), the tallest volcano on the "big island" of Hawaii, is likely the tallest mountain on Earth. Measured from its base, it is about 10,000 meters tall, but only 4205 m (13,796 ft) are above water.

There is no standard measurement for seamounts (submerged mountains), but notable is the 4000 m (13100 ft) Gregg Seamount in the Atlantic Ocean, which rises to within 800 m (2600 ft) of the surface. A shallower seamount, the Bowie Seamount off British Columbia, is within 24 m (79 ft) of the surface, meaning that in the roughest waves, its summit can break the surface and threaten shipping.

How do people who live in catskill mountain prepare for winter months?

Winters can be hard in New York's northern and western mountainous areas. We do get a lot of snow, usually, and temperatures can get into the teens, or lower, for weeks.

We adapt. Good snow tires on the car for example (studs are allowed in the winter months) and always with emergency equipment (including boots and warm gear) are always in the vehicle.

Winter wear is imperative. Good warm winter jacket, insulated and waterproof boots, lots of fleece, etc.

Keeping your home warm. Many of us use wood stoves for additional heat in the colder months. Burning wood is more efficient and less expensive (if burned properly) than gas, oil, or certainly electric! Weather tight windows and doors, insulated attics and basements, etc.

Overall, it's additional work to prepare ourselves for winter. But it's so damned pretty, and there is so much to enjoy outdoors, that it is SO worth the energy to be ready for it.
