Winters can be hard in New York's northern and western mountainous areas. We do get a lot of snow, usually, and temperatures can get into the teens, or lower, for weeks.
We adapt. Good snow tires on the car for example (studs are allowed in the winter months) and always with emergency equipment (including boots and warm gear) are always in the vehicle.
Winter wear is imperative. Good warm winter jacket, insulated and waterproof boots, lots of fleece, etc.
Keeping your home warm. Many of us use wood stoves for additional heat in the colder months. Burning wood is more efficient and less expensive (if burned properly) than gas, oil, or certainly electric! Weather tight windows and doors, insulated attics and basements, etc.
Overall, it's additional work to prepare ourselves for winter. But it's so damned pretty, and there is so much to enjoy outdoors, that it is SO worth the energy to be ready for it.
