How do you prune mulberry bush?
Pruning of an elderberry can be seen in two phases.
First: If you are attempting to establish a multi stemmed or spreading stand of elderberry it is best to cut the young plant nearly to the ground in early spring. On the other hand, if you are seeking to establish a central trunk just prune the top stem to create your desired shape.
Second: Once you have established the predominant trunk simply prune any dead limbs or competing shoots. Further more, since the branches produce best in their second and third years after the third year either prune the branch, or consider it a development in trunk shape. Thin first year growth to improve yields, but remember to leave some in order to replace those nearing the end of productivity.
I hope this has been helpful.
Happy Gardening!
Mulberry Trees can reach 20 or so feet tall (ours are quite tall) and have heart shaped leaves on them. The bark is light brown and kind of smooth. They have white, dark purple or red fruit resembling a blackberry but smaller. The fruit when ripe is very sweet and great for pies, jams and fresh off the tree. Most trees in the USA are of the dark red/purple- almost black- type. The fruit aren't ready unless they fall into your hand as you try to pick them. You should not have to pull on ripe berries.
