Nat Turner approved of questionable tactics, and in the uprising encouraged the killing of women and children. Many children met very violent deaths. After the uprising, mobs of whites killed many innocent slaves that were not involved in the rebellion as retribution. Harsher slave laws were passed as a direct result, and literacy among blacks was outlawed in the state of Virginia. Nat Turner himself was hung two months after the uprising.
