What are the odds of a high school basketball player making it into the NBA?

There is a VERY SLIM chance of one making it to the NBA. Lets put it this way; there are 15 players on a basketball team in high school. There are around 10 schools in most school districts. Fifteen players X 10 schools = 150 players. There are only 60 players taken in every NBA draft. There are 150 players just in those schools, and that didn't even cover 1/1000th of the state. Only the best of the best make it into the NBA. There is a greater chance of collegiate scouts noticing high school players and the players making it into college, but into the NBA, very slim.

Okay let's explore. How many high schools are there in the world?

Now the boys.

Now the boys who play basketball for their team.

That's about 10,000,000 at any given time.

Now before going into the foreign markets, let's see how many Division 1 schools there are...312? 312 times 12 is about close to 4,900. Add the foreign markets -- given that many will be in the Division 1 colleges in the U.S., there's probably about say...500 then of high school hopefuls, old men in NDBL leagues and former NBA players attempting tryouts, for a grand total of about 5,400...

5,400 out of 10 FREAKING MILLION!!!

Now in college, keep in mind that you have to get good stats and have people notice you in order to have a shot at making the pros. So out of 5,400, there's 312 times 5 starters, 1560.

Now out of that 1560, many will be seen out east and are on teams that are in the top 25. That's ultra important. So 30 times 5, we've suddenly cut this pool of 1560 NBA wannabes down 90%!!!!! 156!!!!

Jealously must be insane with this group of 156 players. Because from here, the NBA only picks 60 players a year...and only about 40 make a team!!!

Therefore the final score here at Staples Center....

Making the NBA is a 40 in 10,000,000 shot.

What NBA team has the smallest fan base?

While there is no way to know for sure which NBA team has the smallest fan base, one good measure to judge that is to take in account how full the team's arena is when playing at home. Using that method, here are some possible options:

  • Charlotte Bobcats. They are the newest team added to the NBA (back in the 2004-2005 season) and have struggled mightily since their formation. They have often been the laughingstock of the league and have only made the playoffs once in their 9 year history. The team has always been in the bottom of the league in attendance (in regards to how full the arena is).
  • Atlanta Hawks. Despite having a legitimate playoff team for multiple years (starting in the mid-2000s), the Hawks have failed to draw many large crowds or sellouts. Even in the playoffs, where tickets go quickly, the attendance was noticeably sparse. If an exciting playoff team cannot even draw sellouts, that speaks volumes for their fans.
  • Indiana Pacers. The Pacers, despite having one of the league's elite teams over the past few seasons, have struggled to sell out games. As with the Hawks, the crowds were even short in some playoff games. While they are picking up steam this season (ranked around 10th in the league in percent full), this is still shocking for arguably the best team in the NBA. It really tells just how poor a fan base they have.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder would be a logical choice considering their recent move from Seattle, their fans in Oklahoma City have been very abundant and supportive, selling out nearly every home game thus far. They have also been a big draw on the road, with fans from all over the country now sprouting up.

Who was NBA commissioner before David Stern?

Only four men have held the league's top position: David J. Stern, Larry O'Brien, Walter Kennedy and Maurice Podoloff. Each man, in his own way, made a significant impact on the league's success and put a particular imprint on the league's history.

An attorney, Stern began his association with the league in 1966 as an outside counsel and was named NBA General Counsel in 1978. After a promotion to Executive Vice President in 1980, he moved into the Commissioner's office when O'Brien retired in 1984.

What does it mean when an NBA player is 'waived'?

A waiver is a temporary status for players who are released by their team. A player released between August 15th and the end of the regular season stays on waivers for 48 hours. A player released at any other time stays on waivers for 10 days. During the waiver period other teams may claim a waived player. If more than one team tries to claim the player, the team with the worst record gets him. If a player on waivers is claimed, the new team acquires his existing contract and pays the remainder of his salary. There is also a fee of $1,000, payable to the league office, for claiming a waived player.

A team can claim a waived player only if one of the following is true:

  • The team is far enough under the salary cap to fit the player's entire salary.
  • The team has a disabled player exception for at least the player's salary.
  • The team has a trade exception for at least the player's salary.

The player's contract is for one or two seasons and he is paid the minimum salary. If no team claims a waived player, he is said to have "cleared waivers." The player may sign with the team of his choice at that point. The player's new team only pays the pro-rated minimum salary to the player. The player's original team continues to pay the balance of the player's salary. For this reason, few players are actually claimed while on waivers.

If a player is waived after March 1, he is ineligible to be included in the playoff roster of any team that signs him for the remainder of that season.
