Numbats

The Numbat is a squirrel-sized marsupial that only lives in the eucalyptus forests and woodlands of south-western Australia, characterized by its narrow head, pointed snout and distinctive white bands of fur on its orange-brown body. Also known as the Banded Anteater, its diet consists of termites, which it collects with its 10cm long tongue.

What is a predator of the numbat?

Numbats used to be quite widespread across the Australian mainland, prior to European settlement. Now they are endangered, and are found only in the far southwestern corner of Western Australia.

Numbats shelter in hollow logs and shallow burrows in bushland (eucalyptus woodland) with sufficient grassy undergrowth to give them nesting material for their burrows, and some protection from predators

How are numbats becoming extinct?

The primary cause of numbats being endangered is the introduction of non-native species to Australia. Introduced species such as foxes, and feral cats and dogs, pose a considerable threat to the numbat. It is a small, quite defenceless creature, only able to protect itself by hiding in hollow logs.

Another reason is habitat loss. Their habitat has been cleared for industry, agriculture and expanding human habitation.

Bushfires and changed fire regimes have also contributed to the numbats' endangerment. Bushfires destroy the numbats' habitat, including the logs in which it shelters. Numbats are not fast-moving creatures, and they cannot escape bushfires, which can move very quickly.

Are numbats monotremes?

Although they are similar in size and somewhat in appearance, the answer is no, numbats are marsupials and squirrels are placentals.

What does the tail of a numbat look like?

No. Numbats' tails have little to do with helping the animal balance. In the case of most animals (with the exception of kangaroos), a tail is used for balancing by arboreal animals, and the numbat is not arboreal.

What is a young hummingbird called?

What size is a numbat?

A numbat is a small, squirrel-sized, insectivorous marsupial of Australia. Unlike most marsupials, it does not have a pouch for the young, but the joeys cling to the mother's underbelly fur whilst attached to a teat.

The numbat has red-brown fur with six or seven white stripes across its back. It has a relatively long, bushy tail and long ears. It has a black horizontal stripe running through each eye.

A numbat feeds almost exclusively on termites, although it will sometimes eat other types of ants. It has sharp claws for digging into termite mounds, but it also digs out termites from under logs and underground, being able to detect them with its very sensitive nose. It has a long, sticky tongue for collecting the termites.

Why do Numbats have long sticky tongues?

Numbats use their long, sticky tongues for catching termites.

What do numbat?

A numbat spends much of its time hiding from predators and seeking termites and ants in its habitat. It is a small, pouchless marsupial of Australia, found only in southwest Western Australia.

Numbats shelter in hollow logs and shallow burrows in bushland (eucalyptus woodland) with sufficient grassy undergrowth to give them nesting material for their burrows, and some protection from predators.

One of the few truly diurnal marsupials, numbats forage for food during the day. They feed almost exclusively on termites, although they will sometimes eat other types of ants. They have sharp claws for digging into termite mounds, although they prefer to dig out termites from under logs and underground, being able to detect them with their very sensitive noses. They have a sticky tongue for collecting the termites. A numbat eats as much as 20,000 termites a day.

What does a numbat tear open?

Numbats will tear open termite nests and termite mounds with their sharp claws, in search of food. Termites form the main part of a numbat's diet, and once they have dug through to the termite nest, numbats will use their long, sticky tongue to collect the insects.

What is the numbat's weight and height?

Numbats are not generally measured in height, but rather in head to tail length. The total head to tail length of the numbat ranges from 36.5 cm to 48.5 cm. However, when sitting on their haunches, the height of the numbat is about 25 cm. Numbats' weight ranges anywhere between about 300 grams and 700 grams, which is under one kilogram, so they are very slightly-built animals.

What is the amount of food and water needed for the numbat?

Numbats don't have a specific amount of food they must eat, but they usually eat about 20,000 termites. as for water, they do not drink water, because they get all their water from the termites they eat.

What kind of symmetry does the numbat have?

Numbats, like all vertebrates, have bilateral symmetry. This means they have symmetry across one plane (known as the sagittal plane, and directly down the centre of their body), which means one side of their body approximately mirrors the other side.

What is the latin name for numbat?

The numbat's scientific name is Myrmecobius fasciatus.

Why are numbats only in Western Australia now?

Numbats are in a worse position than being threatened - they are officially endangered.

The primary cause of numbats being restricted to just Western Australia is largely because of the introduction of non-native species to Australia in settled areas of southern Australia. Introduced species such as foxes, and feral cats and dogs, caused the loss of huge numbers of numbats. It is a small, quite defenceless creature, only able to protect itself by hiding in hollow logs.

Another reason is habitat loss. Their habitat has been cleared for industry, agriculture and expanding human habitation throughout their former range of southern Australia.

Bushfires and changed fire regimes have also contributed to the numbats' endangerment. Bushfires destroy the numbats' habitat, including the logs in which it shelters. Numbats are not fast-moving creatures, and they cannot escape bushfires, which can move very quickly.

Are Numbats related to the squirrel?

Although they are similar in size and somewhat in appearance, the answer is no, numbats are marsupials and squirrels are placentals.

What is the numbat's job in its community?

The numbat's job in its community is to help keep down termite numbers.

Does a numbat bark louder than a dog?

Numbats do not bark. They are not members of the canine family. Numbats make a soft clicking sound to communicate with each other, and have been known to hiss or growl softly when involved in territorial disputes.

Do numbats take shelter at night in hollow logs?

Numbats do not shelter in hollow logs at night, but during the day, when they are threatened by predators. At night, numbats shelter in grass-lined burrows.

How many numbats are left?

Estimates suggest there are between 900 and 1500 numbats left in the wild in Australia.

Which criminal behavior patterns posed the greatest threat to the public?

Illegal drug useage, distribution & sale.

That response is conveniently concise. I have a very close friend who worked special ops for the D.E.A. (Drug Enforcement Agency) in South and Central America. Suffice it to say his insight has certainly been an inspiration... The difficulty with "illegal drug usage, distribution, & sale" is primarily the illegal part. Countries that don't have the disposable debt or billion dollar budgets for "wars on drugs", have already realized that the citizens will do whatever they wish with their lives and bodies, regardless of legislation... Another difficulty is: that which is legal keeps us just as dependent.

In my own perception~ the criminal behavior patterns which cause the greatest threat may be attributed to a considerable measure of ignorance, or a salient comfort in the midst of covert misery (capitalism) which may be at the expense of others (children & others being paid unfairly in china-indonesia-mexico...), for which we could all be indicted.

Such behavior patterns are demonstrated by the monotony and general lack of awareness and consideration of the masses which constitute a society, void of culture, where the violence becomes increasingly brazen. These offenses are either

A: not prosecuted effectively

B: not prosecuted at all

C: prosecuted for punitive measure, and not an actualization of justice

What kind of forest does the numbat live in?

Yes; numbats feed almost exclusively on termites, although they will sometimes eat other types of ants. They have sharp claws for digging into termite mounds, although they prefer to dig out termites from under logs and underground, being able to detect them with their very sensitive noses. They have a sticky tongue for collecting the termites. A numbat eats as much as 20,000 termites a day.
