What is the common name for the King Penguin?
The common name for the King Penguin is actually King Penguin.
The scientific name is Aptenodytes patagonicus.
They are the second largest species of penguins in the world (the Emperor Penguin species being the biggest).
Who is Dr Smith in the book Mr Popper's Penguins?
Hi Bulla,
I continue to be blown away by the insights you are sharing on this thread and only wish I knew a little more so I could contribute in a somewhat more meaningful way. I would still be interested if you had the time if you could answer some of the questions I asked in this
post, particularly about the Wandjina Spirits of the Kimberly Pilbara regions as they have have always fascinated me and I do quite a bit of work in the Pilbara.
I am also interested in knowing if you have ever heard of and place in credence the works ofViktor Schauberger. While your specific goals and areas of interest seem quite similar and have some overlap, the methods and conclusions you use do seem quite different. But you definitely seem to have quite similar mindsets.....
"This civilization is the work of man, who high-handedly and ignorant of the true workings of Nature, has created a world without meaning or foundation, which now threatens to destroy him, for through his behavior and his activities, he, who should be her master, has disturbed Nature's inherent unity."
Plus no-one wants to know this you idiot get a life and stop cutting yourself and climbing in trees
Do penguins need to eat while migrating?
No, Penguins don't need to eat during the migration. whilst the males are looking after the eggs the females go fishing for food for their newborn chicks and the males had gone fishing before the migration so they have stocked up on fat most survive and some do not. when the males have reached their destination also called the 'hatching grounds' the chicks will hatch and the females will return with the food and the chick is the one to get fed first. Although some females do not return because of the many predators in the oceans. So the males are forced to go out fishing on their own and leave their chick in the safest place they can (which they're aren't many) and when they return there is a slim chance that the chick would be alive because of the land predators or flying predators or the cold or they may have even starve to death.
I hope this helped you :)
How is the emperor penguin adapted to survive in its habitat?
The emperor penguin has thick fur.
It also has a lot of blubber.
Finally it eats hot rocks from volcanoes to keep it's insides warm.
It also eats fish to keep the rest of its speices alive
How does a penguin egg survive in the cold?
Antartica has heaters everywhere ,that's why we have global warming.
What common disability do kiwi ostrich vulture and penguin have?
Don't be silly there is no such thing as a kiwi ostrich vulture.
How does a penguin's blubber help them survive?
Fat cells are an insulator. Especially in aquatic, warm-blooded animals. Unlike land animals, the fat in an aquatic animal adhere to their skin and muscle, creating a solid layer of heat protection. This is true of penguins, whales, seals, and other creatures.
Such blubber is such good insulation that, on the other side of the planet, people living near the arctic circle smear grease made from seal blubber on their skins to keep them warm. Scandinavian aboriginals can actually hunt in below-zero weather with bare, blubber-smeared legs and arms, this works so well.
No they have webbed feet in order to help them swim as well.
Which penguin species is found the furthest north?
There are many different types and species of penguins. Most types live south of the equator however the Galapagos penguin is one of the only species that one will find north of the equator.
Why do penguins only lay one egg?
It is tricky for penguins to keep their eggs warm in the cold climate of Antarctica, and they have to hold the egg on top of their feet rather than allowing it to touch the ice. This can only be managed with one egg at a time.
How does an emperor penguin breathe on land?
Penguins are birds, they are not fish, even though they do swim very well. They have lungs and the breathe the same way that any other bird breathes.
Probably very little, as passing gas is a symptom of a food being poorly digested, and penguins are not force-fed like CAFO cows, for instance. They eat what they are suited to eat.
What type of pengiuns are there?
There are 17 types (species) of penguins. They are:
Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae)
African penguins (Spheniscus demersus)
Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica)
Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri)
Erect-crested penguins (Eudyptes sclateri)
Fiordland penguins (Eudyptes pachyrhynchus)
Galapagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus)
Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua)
Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti)
King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus )
Little (Blue) penguins (Eudyptula minor)
Macaroni penguins (Eudyptes chrysolophus)
Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus)
Rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome)
Royal penguins (Eudyptes schlegeli)
Snares penguins (Eudyptes robustus)
Yellow-eyed penguins (Megadyptes antipodes)
How long have king penguins been around?
King Penguins breed on subantarctic islands between 45 and 55°S, at the northern reaches of Antarctica, as well as Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands, and other temperate islands of the region. The total population is estimated to be 2.23 million pairs and is increasing.[
3]
The largest breeding populations are on Crozet Island, with around 455,000 pairs, 228,000 pairs on the Prince Edward Islands, 240,000–280,000 on the Kerguelen Islands and over 100,000 on the South Georgia Islands. Macquarie Island has around 70,000 pairs. The non-breeding range is poorly known though presumably the subantarctic waters of the southern Indian, South Atlantic and Asian part of the Southern Ocean. Vagrantbirds have been recorded from the Antarctic peninsula as well as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The Nature Protection Society released King Penguins in Gjesvær in Finnmark, and Røst in Lofoten in northern Norway in August 1936. Birds were reported in the area several times in the 1940s though none have been seen since 1949.[
