Persephone (Proserpina)

Demeter is Persephone's mother. Demeter is the goddess of harvest. Persephone was the goddess of Spring. One day Hades kidnapped her and took her to the Underworld where she became the Queen of the Underworld. She now lives in the Underworld 6 months a year. The other 6 months is spent with her mother.

Persephone was born the daughter of Demeter and Zeus, also gods.

It was Hades who kidnapped Persephone. He brought her to the Underworld where she became the Queen of the Underworld. She now lives there six months a year.

Persephone held a pomegranate in her hand because that was one main part of the seasons. Persephone ate the pomegranate meaning that she had to stay in the underworld for 6 months, thus Demeter's creation of the seasons. When Persephone is in the underworld this creates Fall and Winter. When she is reunited with her child, this creates Spring and Summer.

The Greek goddess Demeter is Persephone's mother, or Styx is.

Both are daughters of Zeus; they were half sisters, and were often in each others company before Persephone married Hades.

Hades asked his brother Zeus if he could have Persephone for his bride, to this Zeus agreed without consulting Demeter or Persephone - Hades than took her, and Demeter showed her wrath until she got her daughter back, except Persephone had eaten of the pomegranate and had to return to Hades for half the year, this causes Demeter to make the land cold and barren (i.e. winter). Persephone return brings about spring.

Hades' wife Persephone was tricked into marrying him. When she fell into a hole that led to the underworld, she remembered what her mother (Demeter, goddess of agriculture) had told her; never eat anything in the underworld. When Demeter couldn't find her daughter, she was crestfallen and depressed, searching for Persephone each day. Finally after a few months, Hades hated to see Persephone look so sad, so he offered her a deal; if she ate 3 - 4 pomegranate seeds, he would let her go. Forgetting what her mother told her, Persephone agreed to the deal. When Hades let Persephone out of the underworld, Demeter was rejoicing with glee until Persephone told her about the seeds. Demeter immediately changed from happiness to sadness, because since Persephone ate the 4 seeds, she would have to live as Hades' wife in the underworld for 4 months. This Greek tale explains why we have the season of winter. Hope this helped!

At the time of Persephone's abduction the Olympians were at the beginning of their reign, and every goddess and god were seeking to stabilize their power. One afternoon, Aphrodite and Eros were sitting and looking at the evening sky. Aphrodite was telling Eros that two thirds of the universe are hers to impose her love on whoever she will, but she wasn't happy with the fact that Hades' underworld was unreachable for her. At that moment, Aphrodite saw Hades ride on his chariot and she thought that this was her chance to spread her influence into the underworld. Looking down at the fields, she saw Athene, Hestia, Artemis (these three goddesses are sworn to virginity), and Persephone picking flowers. She thought, "If I leave that girl (Persephone) just like that she will no doubt be influenced by her virgin friends and take the vow of eternal virginity".

And so, Aphrodite had Eros shoot an arrow at Hades (pluto) to make him fall in love with Persephone, and no matter what Hades did, he couldn't get Persephone out of his head, that's why he abducted her.

Hermes and Hecate guide her way out of the Underworld.
