I am primarily a manual Physical Therapist, which means I don't hook people up to a machine and leave the room. I work for an hour at a time, one on one with my patients, alligning vertebral dysfunction with Muscle Energy Technique. We will then move into any soft tissue restrictions. Um, no, not even close. Conceptually, PT started in Sweden in the early 1800's, led by Per Henrik Ling. Sweden began registering the early version of Physical Therapists in 1887; in 1894 the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy was founded in Great Britain. The polio epidemic and World War I brought the need for extensive rehabilitation to those affected, and modern PT was born in the US. In 1921 what is now known as the American Physical Therapy Association was founded by Mary McMillan. The profession has grown and is now well-established worldwide.

It depends on your diagnosis and your doctor. Like any prescription it should be specific as to the diagnosis, the recommended treatment, the frequency and duration. If it's an acute problem that needs closer monitoring your script may be good for 4-6 weeks or less so that you can be re-evaluated sooner. For a more stable or chronic problem you may get a script good for 2-3 months. Sometimes you may just get a script for short term therapy of a few sessions for instructional purposes for someone who can be independent enough to be on their own. As always, your particular insurance coverage plays a big part.

A physical therapist assitance (PTA), requires less education and has less decision making responsiblities. PTA do not perform assesment of a patient, they follow the plan of care as designed by the physical therapist. They do, however, need to monitor the patients response to treatment and do have lots of decision making. Job prospects. Job opportunities will be good for licensed physical therapists in all settings. I do not think there is a CPT code for a discharge visit. I work in a SNF as a PTA and we do not get paid for the day a patient discharge. Now you can, however, use the patient's final visit(s) and use the normal cpt codes and incorporate your discharge planning such as HEP for 97110, 97116 gait training outside with walker or stairs for community integration and family/patient safety education 97530. Just document your dc plans under those codes stating you instruct, train and educated patient. Since we do not get paid for a discharge visit, it is good to always plan ahead ensure you cover all your areas. Hope that helps.
