Pocket Watches

Unlike wristwatches, pocket watches lack straps. They are designed to fit comfortably into garment pockets. Pocket watches usually have a chain to secure the watch to the user's clothing. They are often considered to be a men's accessory, although some women carry them as well.

What is the value of a new haven pocket watch?

Does it work? fair to good condition and running, probably tops 30-35 bucks. Not working, 15-19 depending on condition of case and crystal. SOme other variables like age, adjusted or unadjusted may fluctuate the price. They're not called "dollar watches" for nothin! Even though they can sometimes run and keep good time for a hundred years.

How much is a 15 jewel elgin pocket watch made in 1904 worth?

There are many cases that the watch can be in, but most 15 jewel pocket watches have minimal value over the bullion value of the case. I have sold the movement w/o a case for 15-20 dollars in my store. There are some watches, 15 jewel, that are rarer. My advice would be go to your library and look for the style and name of your particular Elgin.

I have a pocket watch ever Swiss Swiss made 17 jewels engraved on front with hunter and dogs and on back with dog alone. Does this have any value?

I have the same watch but with a man fishing on the front. Any updates????

i was an Avon dealer back in 1970's and these watches were sold then i also have the hunter one i gave my father for fathers day when they came out so they are about 40 years old. mine is in perfect condition also and works great.

I too have an EverSwiss full hunter's case pocket watch. The case is gold tone base metal, with a hunter blowing his horn followed by his dogs. I bought mine new at Kmart sometime in the late 80's for around $20 dollars. It still works fine, but it has little monetary value. Say $50 tops.

What is your 1894 waltham ladies hunter pocket watch worth?

The value of any "collectible" is going to be based on (in no particular order):

  1. The condition of the object:
    • is the case like new?
    • Does it run and keep time?
    • Are there cracks on the dial?),
    • Is it the first example of a particular model?
    • Was it owned by a significant person?
    • Does it have some special significance or modification
  2. Its relative significance
  3. Its scarcity

In general, a ladies pocket watch from 1894 isn't going to be particularly valuable; ladies watches tend to be undervalued to begin with, and the turn of the century was one of the most prolific periods of pocket watch production. That means that #2 and #3 are both going to rank low.

Likely, the most valuable part of the watch will be the case. Solid 14 and 18k gold cases will raise the price significantly but the danger is that the person buying it may be a scrapper who plans on melting the case down for its gold.

It's important to note that #3 above is something that tends to increase over time, so it may be worthwhile to hang onto the watch. This is especially true if the movement is a good quality one (15 jewel or more) and is either running or at least has a balance that swings freely.

Its advisable to attempt to run the watch without having it serviced, as this may damage it due to dried oils and dirt inside the watch.

It could have a broken part, be over-wound, need cleaning, or any number of things. You need to have the watch evaluated locally.

How do you open the back of a AWW Co Waltham Mass key wind pocket watch to view the serial number if you do not have the key?

Place the watch face down in the palm of your left hand. Place the palm of your right hand on back of the watch. Push palms together and turn right hand counter-clockwise. Clock back should screw off. I have one watch like that, but this watch has hinges. I can get the first part open, but not the next layer to view the movement. Thanks for trying to help!

How much is a elgin 15 jewel pocket watch with a railroad picture engraved on the back and it still runs and the serial number is 10291386?

I am not an authority on pocket watches. Value depends largely on whether it has a gold case or a gold filled case. A 15-jewel watch is not officially a "railroad" watch. I think Elgin was probably playing off the railroad theme. Also, I would guess that a 15 jewel is probably gold filled. If the inside of the cased is marked "warranted" it is most likely gold filled. I think a 20 year case is 10k goldfilled and a 25 year case is 14k gold filled. You did not mention the size or if it is open face or a hunting case watch. What I have seen sell in antique malls is $100-200 if gold filled, $300-500 if solid gold. Hope this helps. Perhaps someone with more information will respond. Larry
